Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is the most populous city in India and the fourth most populous city in the world. Mumbai lies on the west coast and has a deep harbour. Mumbai is a group of seven islands. It was home to fishing communities. After the independence, the city was incorporated into Bombay state. In 1996, the city was renamed as Mumbai. The city has many important national institutions in various fields. It attracts migrants from all over India and hence is a melting pot of all communities and cultures. Mumbai is well connected with roads and railways. The local railways are called as the backbone of the city's transport system. The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is the main aviation hub in the city and the second busiest airport in India. Pune is the ninth largest metropolis in India. It is situated 560 meters above sea level on the Deccan plateau at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers. Pune was originally called as Punawadi. It was also called as the "monsoon capital" of the Bombay Presidency until the independence of India. Pune is the hub for educational institutions, information technology and automative companies. Pune has an international airport at Lohegaon, operated by the Airports Authorities of India. It is well connected with roads and rails. One can travel from Mumbai to Pune by road. Mumbai lies in the west coast of India and is the capital of the state of Maharashtra. A melting pot of communities and cultures, Mumbai is the most populous and wealthiest city in India. Mumbai is also one of the world's top 10 centres of commerce. The city houses important financial institutions and many Indian and multinational corporations. Shirdi, famous for its holy shrine of Shirdi Sai Baba, is a town in the state of Maharashtra. Shirdi is located approximately 296 km from Mumbai. It is known as the “Land of Sai”. The closest and highly connected city is Ahmednagar city which is at a distance of 85.2 km from Shirdi. Shirdi witnesses a huge rush of devotees throughout the year. Shirdi is located at a distance of 240 km via NH 3, 272 km via NH 3 and SH 30 and 269 km via NH 222, from Mumbai. From Mumbai to Shirdi, it takes around 7 to 8 hours by road. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and many private operators run buses from Mumbai to Shirdi daily on a regular basis. The ticket fare can be anywhere between Rs. 230 and Rs. 700 depending on the bus type. Mumbai Dadar-Sainagar Shirdi Express (12131) runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and takes around 6 hours. Fare in a sleeper class is Rs. 184. Trains towards Shirdi depart from Mumbai CST (CSTM) railway station. Kopergaon railway station (16 km from Shirdi), Manmad railway station (58.6 km from Shirdi) and Lasalgaon railway station (60 km from Shirdi) are the three nearest railway stations to Shirdi. There are quite a number of daily trains from Mumbai to these stations. Cars, jeeps and buses are easily available from these stations to Shirdi, and it may take a travel time of about one hour or less. Shirdi airport is under construction. The nearest airport to Shirdi is Aurangabad Airport which is also known as the Chikkalthana Airport, which is 115 kms away. There are several flights from Mumbai to Aurangabad provided by airliners such as Air India, JetKonnect and Jet Airways. It takes only 50 minutes to reach Aurangabad from Mumbai by a direct flight. Delhi, capital of India, is a cosmopolitan city which shows the new face of contemporary Indian society. The marvels of architecture like The Parliament of India, Rashtrapati Bhavan and Mughal Gardens are all located in Delhi. The city has a glorious past being the capital of kingdoms and empires. Delhi is known for its ancient monuments like the India Gate, Qutub Minar, Juma Masjid and Red Fort; fabulous eating places and bustling markets. Shimla, nestled in the Himalayan ranges and located at an average height of 2200 meters is unique with its unparalleled beauty. A very popular holiday retreat, it is the capital of the State of Himachal Pradesh. Many British period, Victorian architectural buildings are found here. Shimla is famous for The Mall (main shopping centre), Chadwick falls, Jhakoo hills and the Viceregal Lodge. Dehi to Shimla is well connected by the road and rail routes but at present there are no flights connecting the two cities. Shimla is located at a distance of 370 km from Delhi. From Delhi one has to drive on the NH1 via Panipat, Karnal and Pipli to reach Ambala. From Ambala take the NH22 via Panchkula to arrive at Kalka. The roads from here are on hilly terrain and you can drive via Dharampur and Kandaghat to finally arrive at Shimla. The entire journey takes about 9 hours. To mention a few are the Himalayan Queen (14095) which leaves Delhi at 05.45 hours and arrives at Kalka at 11.10 hours. The Kalka Shatabdi Express (12011) departs from Delhi at 07.40 hours and arrives at Kalka at 11.45 hours. From Kalka one can take one of the toy trains which cover 96 km in about6 hours time. Some of the popular trains are the Kalka Shimla Passenger (52457), Shivalik Deluxe Express (52451), Kalka Shimla Express (52453), Himalayan Queen (52455) and the Rail Motor (72451) among others. Located on the western part of Deccan plateau among the Western Ghats, the hilly city of Pune is the largest city in Maharashtra. The fare and the time taken vary with the trains. Air travel from Bangalore to Mysore is not possible. Mysore does have an airport but it is not functional.
