How To Reach From The Towns Of Mysore To Ooty   By: rashmiranjan patil
Mysore and Ooty are two popular tourist destinations in India. Both the places are clubbed together in many of the tour packages due to their nearness. Mysore known as the City of Palaces and Ooty known as the Queen of Hill Stations are the most sought after tourist destinations in South India. And so, they are well connected with each other by rail and road. Ooty is located at a distance of about 127 km away from Mysore. The best way to reach Ooty from Mysore is by car which takes a travel time of about 3 hours. The main place covered during the journey from Mysore to Ooty are Nanjangudu at about 25 km from Mysore, Gundlupet 37 km away from there, 56 km far from Gundalpetu is Kadasholai and at a distance of 11km away from Kadasholai is Ooty. The nearest airport to Ooty is at Coimbatore. There are no direct flights from Mysore to Coimbatore. Thus journey by flight is not possible directly from Mysore to Ooty. There are no direct trains available from Mysore to Ooty. So journey by train to Ooty from Mysore is also not recommended. The nearest railway station to Ooty that provide train services from Mysore is at Coimbatore. A number of private taxis and cabs are available from Mysore to reach Ooty. The travel time between Mysore and Ooty by car is about 3 hours. The journey is interesting since it passes many jungle bungalows and forests. Private taxis and cabs can charge from 12 rupees to 55 rupees per kilometer depending upon the type of vehicle chosen by the traveler. There are direct buses available to travel from Mysore to Ooty. The journey by bus takes about 4 hours to reach Ooty from Mysore. There are government buses as well as private bus services to travel from Mysore to Ooty. Ooty bus station is located in the city center itself. Since roadways are the only easiest and comfortable mode of transportation between Mysore and Ooty, the most recommended mode is also the same. Journey by car is most suitable for families with kids, group travelers and senior citizens, to travel from Mysore to Ooty. Journey by bus from Mysore to Ooty is suited for youngsters, backpackers and individual travelers. There are a lot of restaurants, ATMs and petrol bunks on the way to Ooty from Mysore. Those travelers with traveling sickness will have to take extra breaks in between the travel from Mysore to Ooty since the way can be hilly with lot of twists and turns. Nasik, a religious city in Maharashtra, is situated at the foothills of Western Ghats on the bank of Godavari River. It is believed that Lakshmana had slashed off the nose of Surpanakha here and thus the place is called Nasik which means nose. Shirdi is better known as the place where the popular saint Shirdi Sai Baba lived and is situated in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra state. Popularly called the 'Land of Sai', Shirdi is considered to be a pilgrimage destination for many Sai devotees throughout the year. Baba Sai's teaching mostly combines the elements of Hinduism and Islam. The Shirdi temple complex which is the main attraction of Shirdi is spread over an area of about 200 square meters. Maruti Temple and Shani Temple, constructed under the supervision of Shirdi Sai Baba, are the other places of attraction in Shirdi. Maruti Mandir is considered being a favourite place of Sai Baba, who used to conduct satsangs here on a regular basis. The distance from Nasik to Shirdi is about 112 km. The best way to travel from Nasik to Shirdi is by road. State Transport and private buses run on this route at regular intervals. Shirdi can be reached from Nasik in less than three hours. The SH 39 that connects Nasik to Shirdi is wide and four-laned. The road has numerous hotels, refreshment stalls and petrol bunks along the way. Taxi services are available and the journey costs about Rs. 2300. If you are keen on taking your own vehicle, the drive from Nasik to Shirdi will not disappoint you. Shirdi's railway station, the Sainagar Shirdi Railway Station is just 2 km from Shirdi. Few trains from Nasik stop at Sainagar Station. SNSI LTT Special (01060) and Janshatabdi (01038) connect Nasik and Shirdi. Most of the trains from Nasik stop only at Kopargaon situated on the Manmad-Daund line, 14 km from Shirdi. The daily trains from Nasik to Kopargaon are Goa express (12779), Nasik-Manmad express (51761), Amarvathi express (17905), Azad Hind express (12129), Saigram express (12749) and Nasik SNSI express (14539). From Kopargaon you can catch a bus or hire a cab to Shirdi. There is a direct train to Shirdi from Kopargaon, the Lokamanya Tilak-Shirdi express that takes 45 minutes. One can also catch a train from Nasik and get down at Manmad and catch a bus or cab to Shirdi. Nandigram Express (11402), Gorakpur CSTM (0130), Vidarbha Express (12106), Devagiri Express (17058) and Punjab Mail (12138) are the trains that connect Nasik and Manmad. Manmad station is 58 km away from Shirdi and buses and cabs are available. The closest airport is Gandhinagar Airport in Nasik. Ooty is a scenic hill station situated in the Nilgiri mountain ranges of Tamil Nadu. Situated around 127 km from Mysore, this hill station is much frequented by tourists who travel the distance from Mysore to Ooty to escape the hot summers and experience tranquility and serene beauty. This 'Queen of Hill Stations' is surrounded by lofty mountain ranges, and dotted with many a scenic waterfall and streams and is enshrouded in lush green tea plantations. A favourite among adventurers is a trek to the Doddabetta Peak, which is the highest peak in the region perched at an altitude of 2286 m above sea level. Ooty was originally inhabited by Todas and few other tribes before it came under the British rule, after which its name changed from Udhagamandalam to Ootacamund and then to its shortened version Ooty. Ooty has numerous sightseeing attractions on offer, of which the most prominent one is a ride on the toy train of the Nilgiri Mountain Railways, which is almost synonymous with Ooty. Stretching from Coonoor to Udhagamandalam, this Nilgiri toy train ride commences at a small station near Mettupalayam called Kallar and passes through a scenic route as it climbs up and down several hills. The toy train moves at a rather slow pace and is an ideal way to explore the beauty of this hill station. The Government Rose Garden situated on the slopes of the Elk Hill has over 20,000 varieties of roses, which is the largest collection of roses in the country and a major attraction among tourists. Botanical Gardens spread across an area of 22 acres is famous all over the country for its comprehensive collection of exotic and indigenous plants, shrubs, medicinal plants, bonsais and many more and is another one of Ooty's attractions. Ooty Lake is another prominent attraction in the region apart from the Mudumalai National Park. Mysore to Ooty distance is well connected by roadways and railways. By road, the journey takes around 3 hours and is considered the best option. Some of the major towns covered during the road journey to Ooty are Nanjangud, Gundlupet, Kadasholai and then Ooty. The route is dotted with several popular restaurants that offer good food and a resting place for the tired limbs. Buses from Mysore to Ooty take about 4 hours and is ideal for backpackers. However, families would be more comfortable availing the service of cabs which charge in the range of INR 13 to INR 30 depending upon the type of vehicle. Especially if there are children or seniors involved, cabs provide the required comfort as well as flexibility to make unscheduled stops in between. Located in the Laccadive Sea close to the coast of Kerala is a group of 36 islands, Lakshadweep. This group mainly comprises of several small islets, coral atolls and coral reefs. Lakshadweep is India's smallest Union Territory and out of the 36 only 10 are inhabited by a population of 65000 whose main activities include fishing, coconut cultivation and coir twisting. Meaning 'a thousand islands' in the local language, Lakshadweep comprised of mainly three archipelagos, Lakshadweep, Maldives and Suvadives. Kavaratti, the capital, is the most developed island among all of Lakshadweep islands, being the administrative headquarters of the archipelagos. The population mainly comprises of Muslims and there are many mosques around including the beautiful Ujra Mosque. The ornate ceiling is carved from a single piece of driftwood and is a stunning work of art. The lagoon at Kavaratti is very popular for its silvery soft beaches and clear waters that make for a perfect site to view the underwater marine world in a glass-bottomed boat. It is also an ideal place to swim in the gentle waters or indulge in water-sports adventure. The marine life exhibits at the Marine Aquarium is also very popular. Kalpeni is the largest lagoon and is visited for the kayaking and boating experience it offers. This lagoon is not only the largest one but is also shallow enough to enjoy water-sports without too much risk. Minicoy in southern Lakshadweep is similar to the island of Malidves in culture and language. The language spoken here is Mahl, a dialect of Divehi, which is the language of Maldives. The beautiful island of Kadmat is a much sought after destination for divers from around the world. With a diverse array of marine life, this lagoon is home to several breathtaking dive sites. The lagoon being of equal depth adds to its popularity. This secluded island also has a long shoreline with scenic beaches. The only uninhabited island that is open to tourists is the Bangaram Island. Popular for its beautiful coral formations and a variety of bright coloured fishes, it is accessible by speed boat from the nearby island of Agatti. The most important among all these islands is the Agatti Island, which serves as a gateway into the exotic archipelagos of Lakshadweep. It is so because Agatti is the sole island that has an airport in it. Lakshadweep islands is accessible to only those tourists who have a permit to enter these islands. Although foreign nationals are allowed only in the islands of Kadmat, Bangaram and Agatti, domestic tourists can obtain the permits from Kochi in Kerala. Kasauli is a beautiful town located in Solan district of the state of Himachal Pradesh. Established as a cantonment for the British army in 1842, Kasauli is perched at a height of 1,800 metres. When the British chanced upon Kasauli in the early 1800's, they were not just charmed by the chir-pine, Himalayan oak and huge horse chestnut forests but also by the salubrious weather. Kasauli is still reminiscent of the colonial rule and the ambience is reinforced by the numerous winding cobbled paths, old-world artefact shops, cottages with porticoes and small manicured gardens and fruit orchards. The drive up from the plains of Chandigarh and Panchkula takes you through some beautiful terrain comprising of forests and valleys. The roads wind up and glide up and down the hillsides and offer some magnificent vistas of the surroundings. The Baptist Church in Kasauli dates back to the early 1900s and is made of brick and wood. Though the church was destroyed in a fire renovation is going on. The Christ Church dates back even further to the mid 1800s. The church contains stained glass windows depicting many beautiful biblical figures. The Pasteur Institute in Kasauli, set up in 1900, is the oldest in India and takes care of the production of anti-rabies vaccine against mad dog-bite and, at the same time, treats victims who have been bitten by dogs. The Central Research Institute in Kasauli produces vaccines for affording immunity from Typhoid, small-pox, cholera and snake-bite. The highest point in Kasauli is the Monkey point and commands an excellent view. On top of the hill is a Lord Hanuman temple. The legend is that Lord Hanuman while returning from the Himalayas after obtaining the Sanjivani herb put his foot on the hill giving a foot shape. Chandigarh and Shimla are nearest airports from Kasauli. The nearest railhead is Kalka in Haryana, 40 km from Kasauli. Numerous private and state buses, luxury coaches and taxis are available from Chandigarh and Delhi. The best time to visit Kasauli is between April to November, when the climate is pleasant and it is not so cold. In winters, the temperature hovers around 10 to 20 degrees many a times, even goes down to negative. While in peak summers the temperature hits as high as 32 degree Celsius. For accommodation in Kasauli you can get various options ranging from budget hotels to luxury resorts. Besides the hotels there are home stays that suit both your budget and provide you a lively experience to the local lifestyle. These hotels and resorts give discounts during the off season. Dharamshala - the home of the Tibetan community in exile - is located in the valleys of the Dhauladhar range in the foothills of the Himalayas. Located in the Kangra district in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala with its dense oak, pine and deodar forests, rivulets, cool mountain air, and numerous trekking options into the hills and valleys attractive surroundings and the nearby snowline, has everything for a perfect holiday. In 1959, when His Holiness Dalai Lama led his supporters from Tibet to India, the Indian Government decided to gift Dharamshala to him so that the numerous Tibetans could make this place their home. Dharamshala literally translates into 'spiritual sanctuary'. It is from here that the Tibetan Government in exile governs from. Dharamshala comprises of two areas - the lower Dharamshala at an altitude of 1380 m along with upper Dharamshala with the suburbs of Mcleodganj and Forsytheganj at an altitude of 1830 m. Mcleodganj, 13 km from Dharamshala, is famous all over the world as the religious centre of Tibetan Buddhism. Numerous Buddhist monasteries, prayer wheels and gompas adorn this mystical town along with the traditional Tibetan handicrafts, thangkas, carpets, garments and other knick knacks. The church of St. John in the wilderness is situated on the slopes of Mcleodganj and is the final resting place of numerous British officers including Lord Elgin, a British Viceroy of India during the 19th century. Other than the monasteries, numerous ancient temples like Jwalamukhi, Brijeshwari, Bhagsunath Temple and Chamunda can be found here. The important tourist destinations are Bhagsu Falls, Tsuglagkhang, Namgyal Monastery, Tsechokling Gompa and Norbulingka Institute. Another important attraction is the Triund hill amidst the Dhauladhar ranges. Triund, located about 9 km from Mcleodganj, can be reached after a 5 hour difficult trek and is very popular among the trekking enthusiasts. A few places one can visit when in Dharamshala are the Kangra Art museum at Kotwali bazar, War memorial, Kunal Pathri temple and plush tea gardens on the way to Kunal Pathri. The Kangra museum in Dharamshala gives an insight into the town's rich past with its display of various artefacts like miniature paintings, sculptures, pottery, coins, jewellery, royal attire and 5th century manuscripts. Dharamshala is well connected by road and air. The nearest airport is at Gaggal, 13 km away and can be approached by air from Delhi. Pathankot, the nearest broad gauge railway station is 85 km away. The Kangra toy train will take you till Kangra, 17 km away, and is worth a try for the scenic beauty. Taxis to Dharamshala are available from Delhi. HPTDC operates a regular luxury coach from Delhi to Dharamshala. Ooty, the former capital of the Nilgiri district, offers serene atmosphere, blue misty weather and the green valleys. The official name of Ooty was Udhagamandalam. The British changed the name Udhagamandalam to Ootacamund and later to Ooty. Lying at an elevation of 2286 m, the city of Ooty is a land of flowers and trees. A famous Kurinji flower, blue in colour, blossoms once in twelve years here. The Botanical Garden of Ooty, established in 1847, is a very important place to visit for the tourists as well as for the students. Ooty retains the colonial style bungalows, fire places and stonewalled churches. The aroma of spices and tea filled in the atmosphere. The mountain train journey from Kallar on a ratchet is very adventurous as well as enjoyable. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is one of the oldest railways in the country and it can find a place in the UNESCO World Heritage site. The train covers many curves, tunnels and sprawling tea gardens. The unending tea plantations in the city of Ooty are very attractive and the Nilgiri tea is very famous in the market. The erstwhile Wodeyar's land, Mysore is situated in the state of Karnataka. The city of Mysore is the second largest city in Karnataka with a rich history. Situated at a distance of 130 km from the capital city of Bangalore, Mysore was the capital of the Wodeyars during their dynasty. Mysore amazes its visitors by its stunning palaces, sprawling gardens, religious places, rich culture and heritage. The city of Mysore has maintained its old tradition of art, music, folklore, painting and literature even today. The main landmark of the city is the Chamundi Hill where the famous Chamundeswari Temple is situated. Ooty does not have an airport or railway station. The nearest airport to Ooty is Coimbatore. Alternately, you can take a bus from Mysore to Ooty which is also comfortable. It takes almost 3 and half hours to reach Ooty from Mysore. Cabs charge Rs. 3300/- for 4 travellers. For more than 4 tourists, the cost increases to around Rs. 4300/-. Situated on the east bank of River Hooghly, Kolkata was the capital of India during the British rule until 1911. It was then known as Calcutta. An administrator of the English East India Company, Job Charnock, was the official founder of the city. Victoria Memorial, designed by Sir William Emerson, is the most famous landmark and tourist attraction of Kolkata. The city is also home to monuments, science museums and temples that bear the architectural significance. Rabindra Sadan and Nandan are the theatre and music complexes. Among the popular religious places include Kalighat Temple, St. Paul's Cathedral and Nakhoda Mosque. Kolkata has amusement parks like Aquatica and Nicco Park. The other tourist attractions in the city are Kolkata Museum, Children's Museum, Botanical garden and zoo. The distance from Kolkata to Chennai, state capital of Tamil Nadu, is about 1660 km. It is believed that Chennai or 'Chennaipattinam' got its name from the Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple. The city is famous for its temples and churches. They are considered to be the fine examples of architecture and craftsmanship. Chennai is also famous for its pre-Independence structures like Fort St. George, St. Mary's Church and Madras High Court. All the major airlines such as Air India, Jet Airways, Indigo and Kingfisher have regular flights from Kolkata to Chennai and back. While many of the flights are direct to Chennai, some others have stopovers at some places. The direct flight takes about three hours. Chennai is also well connected by train with Kolkata (Howrah). The daily direct trains from Kolkata to Chennai are Howrah-Chennai Coromandal Express (No.12841) and Howrah-Chennai Express (No.12508). Gauhati-Ernakulam/Thiruvananthapuram Express (Nos. 12508, 12510, 12514 and 12516) trains run six days in a week (except on Saturday). The trains take around 26 hours to 28 hours to travel from Kolkata to Chennai. Only a few travellers venture to travel such a long distance from Kolkota to Chennai by road. Yet some people use shared taxis to travel from Kolkata as often they fail to get conf0i rmed reservations in the trains. Share taxi cabs charge a fare of Rs.2700 to Rs.3500 per person depending on the car they are travelling in. Similarly from Chennai To Kolkata is also very easy to travel. New Delhi is the national capital of India as well as one of the nine districts of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The seat of the Indian Government, Delhi is also one of the fastest growing cities in the world and was lately rated as a Beta World City. Delhi has a rich history and cultural heritage that dates back to early ages. It came under the rule of dynasties like Ghori, Lodhis and the Mughals, to name a few. The British made Delhi their capital in 1911 and eventually, it became the national capital in the year 1947. Katra is a small town situated in the Reasi district in state of Jammu and Kashmir. Tucked amidst the Trikuta Mountains, Katra is the entryway to the shrine of mother Goddess - Vaishno Devi. Katra is located approximately 42 kilometers away from Jammu and is the most important transit location for pilgrims headed to the Vaishno Devi shrine. It is in Katra that the pilgrims have to register before progressing to the shrine atop the mountain. The registration at Katra is done mainly to provide the pilgrims with an insurance cover of Rs 100000 for a journey of around 15 kilometers to the temple. Essentially a town thriving on the pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi, Katra provides all facilities as a base camp for the journey towards Vaishno Devi. Situated at an altitude of 750 meters, Katra is a remarkable example of natural splendor. Its proximity to Vaishno Devi has brought Katra into limelight. The distance from Delhi to Katra is around 610 km. Since Katra has no railway or airport, it is only accessible by roadways. Even so, it is reasonably easy to reach to Katra from Delhi. At the same time, it is also possible to board the train from Delhi to Jammu Tawi, which is the nearest rail head and then proceed to Katra by bus. Numerous buses are available from the railway station to reach Katra. Alternatively, one can also board bus from Delhi itself. There are several types of buses available for travelling to Katra. These bus services are run by both government and private operators. As such, regular services are available from Delhi to Katra. While a non A/C bus ticket will cost one around INR 300, an A/C Volvo Semi Sleeper ticket will cost up to Rs INR for an adult. Hiring private cab to travel from Delhi to Katra is also a viable option, especially if one is travelling with family consisting of infants, elders and invalids.
