Bangalore or Bengaluru, as it is known today, is the capital city of the southern state of Karnataka in India. Renowned as the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore is located on the Deccan Plateau, in the southeastern part of Karnataka. Bangalore was known as the Garden City of India from the 1950s owing to the beautiful gardens that dotted the city. But at present, this metropolis is more or less known for its numerous IT based companies and tech parks. As Bangalore enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year, many people settled here, thereby earning it another sobriquet - the Pensioner's Paradise. Kodaikanal is a famous hill station located in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal means 'The Gift of the Forest' in the local dialect Tamil. Kodaikanal is also called the ‘Princess of Hill Stations' as it was a popular summer retreat right from the days of the British. Kodaikanal was established as a shelter from the heat and diseases of the plains by the British in the year 1845. Presently, Kodaikanal thrives on the tourism industry and offers a plethora of attractions which include waterfalls, valleys, view points, meadows, caves and unspoiled natural beauty. Travelling from Bangalore to Kodaikanal is moderately simple. Though both the cities aren't directly connected by air transport, proximity of Kodaikanal to Madurai (126 km) and Coimbatore (180km) airports makes the travel easy. There are direct flights from Bangalore to Coimbatore and Bangalore to Madurai. Each of these airports offers passenger amenities like restaurants and pre-paid taxi service. Taxis to Kodaikanal charge upwards of INR 4,000. Travel time from Coimbatore to Kodaikanal by cab is around five hrs amidst picturesque settings. Time taken to achieve Kodaikanal from Madurai by automotive is around 3 and half hours. Rail connectivity from Bangalore to Kodaikanal is also good. Two trains, Nagarcoil Express and Tuticorn Express connect Bangalore to Kodaikanal (Kodai Road station). The train takes approximately ten hours time to arrive from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. Advance booking of train tickets is suggested if travelling with elders and youngsters, particularly during the peak seasons – which are from April to June and September to October. Traveling from Bangalore to Kodaikanal by road is less complicated as there are several buses that ply from Bangalore. Private agencies and government agencies, both run different types of buses like airbus, AC luxury seater, AC sleeper, Semi sleeper, 2 X 2 coaches. They charge around INR 340 to INR 514, according to the facilities provided. Hiring taxi is another option to travel from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. The beautiful hill station of Ooty or Ootacamund is one of the most popular hill stations in India and often visited by a number of tourists from Bangalore for whom it is the ideal weekend destination. Ooty is perched at an altitude of 2286 m nestled amidst the beautiful Nilgiri Hills. Ooty is fringed by mighty mountains peaks and is also the site of the highest point in Southern India, the Doddabetta Peak. This mountain peak is a favourite adventure site for many adventure seekers who come from Bangalore to Ooty to indulge in some adventure tourism. The landscape of Ooty is beautified by its carpet of plush green tea plantations, cascading waterfalls and a wide variety of flora. Apart from tea plantations, Ooty is also famous for its spice gardens which grow a variety of spices. The region is also famous for its oil extraction from eucalyptus tree, plants like lemongrass and geranium. One of the highlights of Ooty, apart from its spectacular scenery is the Toy Train ride along a very scenic route. This narrow gauge train traverses through a 46 km long route climbing up and down several hills and offers tourists a breathtaking view from every angle of the entire journey. The journey commences at a small station near Mettupalayam called Kallar and takes quite a long time to reach its destination since the steam engine needs to be frequently replenished with water. Among the many popular tourist attractions in Ooty, most noted ones are Ooty Lake, Deer Park, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, the Rose Garden, Ooty Botanical Garden and the Stone House. The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, a national park and tiger reserve also draws a large number of tourists to it. The city of Bangalore is situated around 267 km from Ooty by road. a well-laid network of roads and rails, connect the city of Bangalore to Ooty. There is no direct train to Ooty, however those wishing to traverse the distance by road can do so by taking a train from Bangalore to Mettupalayam and then from there Ooty is a toy train ride away. Ooty does not have an airport of its own and the closest airport is in Coimbatore. Travelling to Ooty via flight is not a recommended way to travel as it is not only uneconomical but is also quite a time consuming option. a cab ride from Coimbatore airport to Ooty would set you back by around INR 2500. An excellent mode of transport is by the state run KSRTC bus, which are available in plenty. A number of private buses also operate on this route. This has earned the city the title of the cultural capital of Maharashtra. Pune has several places of interests for tourists. Eighth century Pataleshwar Cave Temple, dedicated to the god of the underworld, is a marvel of rock-cut architecture. Shrimant Dagduseth Halwai Ganpati Temple houses the most favourite deity of the city, the Ganesha. Osho Park is a great centre for meditation and rejuvenation. Pune boasts of the prestigious Film institute; It has produced several top class actors to Bollywood. Aga Khan Palace, where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned for participating in the ‘Quit India Movement' in 1942, is a major tourist attraction. The distance from Pune to Lonavala is about 64 km. Lonavala is well connected with Pune by rail and road. All the trains going from Pune to Mumbai have a stop at Lonavala. The trains, many of them express, take only little more than an hour for the journey from Pune to Lonavala. Lonavala is on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. Buses are available on this route at short intervals. The taxi cabs charge about Rs.1500 for the trip from Pune to Lonavala. Located in the Sahyadri Ranges, Lonavala is spread over an area of about 38 square km. The name of the city is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Lonavali', which meant a ‘group of caves'. There are many caves in and around Lonavala. One of famous tourist destinations in Lonavala is Tungi Fort. The other forts in the area are Koregad Fort, Lohagad Fort, Tikona Fort and Visapur Fort. Many caves like Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves and the Bedsa Caves are situated in and around the town. Ryewood Park, Sausage Hills, Scorpion's Sting, Tungarli Lake and Valvan Lake are among the other attractions. The travel time to Madurai from Bangalore by flight is one hour though it takes about three hours to reach Kodaikanal by road from Madurai airport. The two train services that link Bangalore with Kodaikanal are Nagarcoil Express and Tuticorin Express. Trains to Kodaikanal leave from two stations in Bangalore namely Bangalore city Junction and Krishnarajapuram respectively. The train services are available only till the railway station at Kodai road. A two hour journey by bus or taxi is needed to reach Kodaikanal city from this train station. The Nagarcoil Express Train services are available only on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. However there are train services to Kodaikanal from Bangalore offered by the Tuticorin Express train on a daily basis. The travelling time in train is around 9-10 hours and online booking is also facilitated. Kodaikanal has many hotels with all the facilities for a perfect vacation. Mahabalipuram is located in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu. It is named after King Mahabali who was killed by Lord Vishnu. It is home to many historic monuments that were erected in around 8th century B.C. Some of these monuments were declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. There are many buses that operate seven days a week from Chennai to Mahabalipuram. These buses are operated both by the government agencies as well as private operators. The bus fare depends on the type of bus preferred as well as the amenities offered. Travelling by bus is the easiest way to reach Mahabalipuram from Chennai. But it is not recommended for senior citizens and invalids. You can also hire a taxi from Chennai if you want to have a more comfortable journey. Mahabaleswar is a beautiful hill station located at an altitude of 1353 meters above sea level in the Satara district, Maharashtra. Since this vast plateau bound by valleys on all sides in the Western Ghats range is the source of the river Krishna that flows through the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Mahabaleswar also has pilgrimage value according to the Hindu mythology. Mahabaleswar, which is situated at about 266 km away from Mumbai, is well-connected to the capital city of Maharashtra, Mumbai by road and rail. The best mode of transportation from Mumbai to Mahabaleswar is supposed to be by road. The main places covered under the travel from Mumbai to Mahabaleswar include, Khopali ata distance of 76 km away from Mumbai, Tathawade at about 57 km far from Khopali, Wai which is at a distance of 103km away from Tathawade that finally will lead to Mahabaleswar which is at about 32 km from Wai. The total travel time taken to reach Mahabaleswar from Mumbai is about 5 hours and 20 minutes. Mahabaleswar does not have an airport and so reaching Mahabaleswar by air is not possible. The nearest airport is at Pune and from here one can get taxis and buses to Mahabaleswar. The closest railhead that connects Mahabaleswar to Mumbai is at Wathar from where one gets taxis, private cabs and buses to reach Mahabaleswar. Koyna Express No: 11029 which depart from Mumbai CST station at 8:40 am will reach Wathar at 3:10 pm whichtakes a travel time of 6 hours and 30 minutes and has services on all the days. The Sahyadri Express No: 11023which depart from Mumbai CST station at 5:50 pm will reach Wathar at 12:58 amwhich takes a travel time of 7 hours and 8 minutes also has services on all the days. Mahabaleswar is best connected via road with Mumbai and there are a number of bus services available from Mumbai to Mahabaleswar. There are buses ranging from A/C Volvo to ordinary buses running between the two places. Bus tickets range from 450 rupees to 700 rupees per person. A lot of private taxi services are also available from Mumbai to Mahabaleswar. These taxis can charge from 4000 rupees to 7000 rupees round the trip depending upon the type of vehicle chosen by the traveler. Train journey is best suited for the senior citizens and group travelers and for those families who travel with kids. Journey by road in car is suited for families with kids and group travelers. Bus journey is suitable only for backpackers, youngsters and individual travelers. Ooty, known as the 'queen of hill stations', is one of the most popular tourist destinations in south India. Located in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, Ooty is a popular summer and weekend getaway for all who want to escape from the sweltering summer heat. Ooty was a popular destination right from the colonial days, and it is still a favourite haunt for tourists across all ages. Located at an altitude of 2240 meters above sea level, Ooty is also famous for its mountain railway line, called the 'Nilgiri Railway', to and from Mettupalayam and is listed as a ‘UNESCO World Heritage Site' in India. The other tourist attractions in Ooty are the Ooty lake, Botanical gardens and Doddabetta peak. You could even visit the nearby destinations like Conoor, Kotagiri and Pykara lake. The distance from Mysore to Ooty is 127 kilometres and can take about three hours. The route from Mysore to Ooty is one of the most scenic one which takes you through two wild life sanctuaries and winding hair pin bends with large mountains looming nearby. If travelling from Mysore to Ooty by car you have to take NH 212, also known as the Bangalore-Calicut road, pass through towns like Nanjangud, Begur and Gundlupet till the Bandipur forest check post. From here you have to follow the NH 67 through Bandipur and Mudumalai forests till you reach Theppakadu. If lucky, you may even spot animals like deer, elephants, wild boars and bears. The speed limit within both the forests is 40 kilometres per hour. From Theppakadu, take the SH 67 and climb the 36 hair pin bends through Kalhatty to reach Ooty. A private taxi would charge anything between Rs 12 to 25 per kilometre, and some times higher due to the precarious mountain roads, depending on the kind of vehicle you hire. Many youngsters prefer to take their bikes instead and it can be quite an adventure driving through the forests and the winding mountain roads. The check posts at Bandipur and Mudumalai remain close from 9 pm to 6 am. This is to avoid night time driving which had been causing a lot of accidents to the animals. While planning a trip from Mysore to Ooty it is important to take note of the check post timings. There are no trains or flights from Mysore to Ooty. KSRTC and several private bus operators also ply buses on this route and offer a/c, non a/c and the more comfortable Volvo buses too. The buses prefer not to climb the hair pin bends and take the Gudallur route from Theppakadu, pass Pykara village and reach Ooty. Mahabaleshwar is a charming hill station nestled amidst the Western Ghats famous for its scenic beauty and imposing woods. This hill station, like many other hill stations was discovered by the British, who then went on to make drastic changes in this once sleepy town and even made this their summer capital of Bombay province. The British influence can be seen in the huge colonial bungalows and other palatial structures that line the broad streets of Mahabaleshwar. The Mahabaleshwar Temple dedicated to Hindu god Lord Shiva is one of the region's most prominent attractions. With the wide array of experiences it offers, Mahabaleshwar offers one a tranquil holiday spot combined with the devoutness of a religious centre as well as an adventure destination. Situated at a distance of 266 km from Mumbai, the town of Mahabaleshwar is set at an elevation of 1,353 metres above sea level. Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar is well connected by road, which is the most popular way to travel. A journey of 5 and a half hours, this route covers the following towns: Khopoli, Tathawade, Wai and finally Mahabaleshwar. This route is dotted with several ATMs and hospitals which can be quite useful in times of emergency. The many restaurants and dhabas along the route also provide for excellent stopovers where one can stretch tired limbs and refuel our appetites too. Many tourists hire cabs or drive down in their own vehicle or rented car which takes an approximate 5 and a half hours to reach the destination. Driving down from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar is ideal for group travel, especially those which involve seniors or children who would find the flexibility very comfortable. The city is known for some natural lakes like Hasaraghhatta, Hebbal and Ulsoor. Bangalore has large number of shrines. St. Mary's Church is the oldest church in Bangalore. Dargah Hazarath Tawakkal is visited by both Hindus and Muslims. Jumma Masjid is an imposing structure. The city is also dotted with large number of temples. Vidhan Soudha is a major attraction. Kodaikanal, a popular hill station in Tamil Nadu, is situated about 463 km from Bangalore. The nearest airport to reach Kodaikanal is Madurai (120 km). Coimbatore Airport (180 km) is another option. Taxis are available from both the airports. But going by flight from Bangalore to Madurai or Coimbatore and then hire a taxi to reach Kodaikanal is cumbersome. There is no direct train from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. One has to take a train from Bangalore to Kodaikanal Road station, which is about 80 km from Kodaikanal, and hire a taxi to reach the hill station. The convenient option is to go by road. Taxi cabs and private and tourist buses are available to travel from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. While taxi will take about eight hours, bus will take two hours more to reach the hill station.
