Bangalore To Ooty - How To Reach   By: rashmiranjan patil
Ooty or Ootacumund is one of the most popular hill stations in India. Located at an altitude of 2286 m, Ooty is situated in the Nilgiri Hills and is adorned by mighty mountain ranges, plush tea gardens, cascading waterfalls and a variety of flora. The region is famous for its oil extraction from eucalyptus tree, plants like lemon grass, geranium, spices like clove and also camphor. Some of the popular tourist attractions of Ooty include the Ooty Lake, Deer Park, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, the Rose Garden, Thread Garden, Guna Caves, Dolphins Nose, Fairy Falls, Ooty Botanical Garden and the Stone House. Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the region offers a magnificent view of the whole area. The Madumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is a very renowned national park and tiger reserve that draws a large number of tourists to it. Bangalore is around 267 km from Ooty by road. Ooty is well connected to Bangalore by road and rail tracks. Although there is no direct train to Ooty, Mettupalyam the closest station is linked to Ooty by the toy train on a narrow gauge rail. One gets to travel 46 km through the hills and valleys. The journey starts from Kallar near Mettupalayam and passes through a scenic route as it climbs up and down several hills. The 'Nilgiri Railway' is listed as a 'UNESCO World Heritage Site' in India. One could also take a train to Mysore and drive to Ooty. If travelling from Bangalore to Ooty by car you have to drive to Mysore then take NH 212, also known as the Bangalore-Calicut road, pass through towns like Nanjangud, Begur and Gundlupet till the Bandipur forest check post. From here you have to follow the NH 67 through Bandipur and Mudumalai forests till you reach Theppakadu. If lucky, you may even spot animals like deer, elephants, wild boars and bears. The speed limit within both the forests is 40 km per hour. From Theppakadu, take the SH 67 and climb the 36 hair pin bends through Kalhatty to reach Ooty. Alternately from Theppekkadu you could drive further to Gudallur and follow the Pykara route to reach Ooty. There are a number of buses plying between Bangalore and Ooty by the state run KSRTC. Other private buses also operate in this route and are a good option to consider. The drive from Bangalore to Ooty is a very scenic one with dense vegetation around the roads and mighty mountains looming nearby. If driving yourself may prove too hectic, then hiring a taxi from Bangalore to Ooty is a good option and would leave you poorer by around Rs 7,200 for a round trip. Kodaikanal, popularly known as "The Princess of Hill Stations", is located approximately 500 km away from Bangalore. In Tamil, Kodaikanal means Gift of Forest. Kodaikanal is one of the finest hill stations in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Situated at a distance of 7,200 feet above sea level in the beautiful Western Ghats of India, Kodaikanal town is perched on a plateau above the upper Palani Hills at a height of 2,133 meters between the Parappar and Gundar Valleys of the Western Ghats. It is in the centre of this valley that the Kodaikanal Lake, a man made lagoon of 5 km circumference, is situated. Kodaikanal is a tourist's delight. The main attractions in Kodaikanal include Bryant Park, Coaker's Walk, Bear Shola Falls, Green Valley View (popular as suicide point), Shembaganur Museum of Natural History, Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, Pillar Rocks, Guna caves, Silver Cascade, Dolphin's Nose, Kurinji Andavar Murugan temple and Berijam Lake among others. Kodaikanal is a popular destination and receives a lot of the weekend crowd from Bangalore. Travelling from Bangalore to Kodaikanal is moderately easy. Bangalore and Kodaikanal are not directly connected by air, but the proximity of Kodaikanal to Madurai (126 km) and Coimbatore (180 km) airports makes the travel effortless. There are direct flights from Bangalore to Coimbatore and Bangalore to Madurai. Both airports provide passenger amenities like restaurants and pre-paid taxi service. Taxis are available from both airports to Kodaikanal. They charge upwards of Rs. 4,000. Travel time from Coimbatore to Kodaikanal by cab is around five hours amidst picturesque settings. Time taken to reach Kodaikanal from Madurai by car is around three and a half hours. Rail connectivity from Bangalore to Kodaikanal is good. Two trains, Nagarcoil Express and Tuticorn Express connect Bangalore to Kodai Road railway station. It takes approximately 10 hours time to reach from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. Advance booking of train tickets is recommended in case of traveling with elders and children, especially during the peak seasons, April to June and September to October. Traveling from Bangalore to Kodaikanal by road is easier as there are many buses available from Bangalore. Private operators provide different types of buses like airbus, AC luxury seater, AC sleeper, semi sleeper, and 2X2 coaches. The cost is around Rs. 350 to Rs. 700 depending on the facilities provided. Hiring a taxi is another option to travel from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. Private taxis with or without A/C are available in plenty. They charge anything from Rs. 8,800 to Rs.12,000 for a round trip from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. Alternately, if you enjoy driving, you can also take your own car. There are around 17 hairpin curves you will have to manoeuvre on the steep climb to Kodaikanal.(read entire article)

One of the most popular hill stations in the state of Kerala, Munnar is perhaps one of the most visited hill station by many from the nearby city of Cochin. The distance from Cochin to Munnar is around 130 km by road which is very frequently traversed by local tourists. This popular honeymoon destination is a favourite among many urban couples for its rolling hills and lush greenery all around. The entire region is under a thick carpet of lush green tea plantations that adds to the beauty of this hill station. With a spectacular view of the rolling green hills and winding roads and the mystical blue sky above, Munnar is truly paradise for nature lovers. The journey by road takes approximately 3 hours and passes through the towns of Tripunithura, Kolencherry, Ayyankavu, Oonnukal, Adimaly and Munnar. The route is dotted with many petrol bunks with their adjoining fast food joints that provide a good opportunity to stretch those tired limbs and to refuel both the vehicle and one's appetite as well. Taxis can be hired to go from Cochin to Munnar that charge around INR 15 to INR 30 per km with the rates varying on the type of vehicle chosen. State run and privately run buses also ply between this route and usually takes close to 6 hours to reach Munnar owing to the multiple stops in between. One who wishes to reach Ooty from Bangalore through flight will have to get down at Coimbatore International Airport which is at a distance of 98 km away from Ooty. Travel by flight will take an hour and from the airport taxis and buses are available to reach Ooty. Traveling by road in car from Bangalore to Ooty is the most economical and comfortable mode of transportation between the two places. This is best suited for families with kids, elders and for group travelers. Bus journey is ideal for youngsters, backpackers and individual travelers. Train journey, though needs an interchange between Mettupalayam and Ooty is suited for the elderly and those with travel sickness. Mahabalipuram, a sea port of 7th century, is located in the district of Kancheepuram in the state of Tamil Nadu. Mahabalipuram is said to be the second capital of Pallava dynasty. The city was flourished during the Pallava rule. Mahabalipuram is known for its several ancient historical monuments which are in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and for the sandy beaches. These monuments are built between 7th and 9th centuries. Placed along the Coromandel Coast, Mahabalipuram, is known for the casuarinas trees and ancient temples. From Mahabalipuram, archeologists recovered various megalithic items like burial urns, jars for burials, coins, and cairn circles. The city, also known as Mamallapuram, is also famous for its ancient temples built by Pallavas made from rocks. Some of these temples were carved out of the rocks. This construction of rock cut caves is similar in structure to the rock-cut constructions of Ajantha and Ellora caves. The sculptures of elephants, Nandi, lion, rathas and palaces in granite are eye catching. A dance festival is celebrated every year which is organized by Tourism Department. Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Kathakali and Odissi are performed during the festival. Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, is famous for temples and churches. For seven people it costs Rs. 3,000/- for a round trip. If you have your own vehicle it takes approximately 1 hour to cover the 56 km from Chennai to Mahabalipuram depending upon the vehicle. The Hotels in Mahabalipuram include all types of accommodations with different ranges meant for the tourists. Most of these hotels are situated in a perfect beach facing location.
