Coimbatore, also known as Kovai, is the second biggest city in Tamil Nadu after Chennai. Coimbatore is situated at a distance of about 500 km from Chennai on the banks of the Noyyal River. It is one of the major centres of textile industry and is known as 'Manchester of South India'. Coimbatore was earlier known as Kongunad and its present name was given by the British. Kongu is a unique dialect of Tamil and it is the main language spoken in this city. Since some of the popular hill stations in India, including Ooty, Coonoor and Valparai, are at close proximity, Coimbatore is fast becoming a base camp for travellers visiting them. The major attractions in Coimbatore are the shrines. There are regular bus services and overnight Volvo buses from Chennai to Ooty. Ooty has beautiful landscapes, dense forests, national parks, tea plantations and monuments. Kodaikanal is frequented by tourists all throughout the year and is renowned for its educational institutions of international repute. Kodaikanal is situated at about 465 kmaway from Bangalore. All modes of transportation, road, rail and air can be made use of, to reach Kodaikanal from Bangalore. However, the best possible mode of transportation to reach Koaikanal from Bangalore is to travel by road that will approximately take 8 hours of journey. If travelling by bus, the journey may take an additional 2 hours to reach kodaikanal, since it halts at places for refreshments. Private cabs charge about 12 rupees to 60 rupees per kilometer depending upon the type of car chosen by the traveler. There are direct bus services available from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. Trains to Kodaikanal namely Nagarcoil Express and Tuticorin Express depart from2 stations in Bangalore, Bangaloe city Junction and Krishnarajapuram. The Nagarcoil Express services are available only on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. But there are regular train services to Kodaikanal from Bangalore provided by theTuticorin Express on a daily basis. The travelling time is about 9 to 10 hours. Bangalore is considered as the ideal gateway to India. It has everything to satiate the appetite of travellers. The city has natural parks, lakes, architectural landmarks and research institutions. In the recent past, Bangalore has become a major centre of information technology. Among the major attractions in Bangalore are Bangalore Palace, Tipu Sultan Palace, Ulsoor Lake, Hebbal Lake, St. Mary's Church, Dargah Hazarat Tawakkal, Bull Temple, Shri Nimishamba Devi Temple and ISKCON Temple. Other tourist destinations included Vidhan Soudha, Lalbaugh, Cubbon Park, Ashoka Pillar, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Film City and the prestigious Indian Institute of Science. The distance from Bangalore to Munnar, a hill station in Kerala, is nearly 750 km. By air, the travellers will have to first catch a flight to Kochi from Bangalore and then go to Munnar by bus or a cab. Munnar is around 125 km from Kochi. From Kochi Airport (Nedumbassery), taxi services are available which might cost around Rs. 3000 to reach Munnar. If the travellers go by train from Bangalore, they have to either get down at Aluva (110 km from Munnar) or Ernakulam (125 km from the hill station). There are several express and superfast trains passing through Aluva and Ernakulam. State Transport and private buses and cabs are available from both Aluva and Ernakulam to reach Munnar. The drive by car from Kochi to Munnar takes nearly three hours and 30 minutes. Although the road is smooth (NH 49), it is narrow, twisty and curvy. Kothamangalam is on the way and is 80 km away from Munnar. Between Kothamangalam and the next town 'Adimali', the drive is through a natural forest. There are many waterfalls on the way. Munnar is just 30 km from Adimali but it takes almost an hour to reach the hill station. Alternately, travellers can go from Bangalore to Munnar en route Coimbatore. In that case, they have to catch a flight or train to Coimbatore and then go to Munnar by road. Munnar is about 160 km from Coimbatore. The road journey from Coimbatore passes through Pollachi, Udumalpet, Chinnar and Marayoor. This route is scenic though it takes a bit longer time to reach Munnar. Munnar, earlier summer resort of Britishers, has several tourist destinations like waterfalls, rivulets, winding lines and sprawling tea plantations. Tourist destinations included Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty Lake and Chinnakanal and Atukkad Waterfalls. Munnar is the land of the unique blue flower Neelakurinji. The flower blooms only once in 12 years. The next blooming of the flower is expected in 2018. All types of accommodation, luxury, mid-range and budget, are available in Munnar. Mumbai, a combination of seven reclaimed islands, is known by different names. Portuguese called it 'Bom Baia' meaning 'good bay' in their language. The Britishers changed it to Bombay. Another version is that the original inhabitants of the islands were fisher folks called Kolis. They worshiped a Hindu deity called Mumbadevi. Bombay is now renamed as Mumbai. Mumbai houses several heritage sites, particularly the Gateway of India, which interest globetrotters. Other important sites Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Vasai Fort, Flora Fountain, Essel World, Water Kingdom, Prince of Wales Museum, Nehru Planetarium , Jehangir Art Gallery, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai Zoo, Taraporewala Aquarium, Chowpatty Beach, Juhu Beach, Vihar Lake, Hanging Gardens, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Nariman Point, Marine Drive ('Queen's Necklace'), Mahalaxmi Temple, Iskcon Temple, Siddhivinayak Temple, Haji Ali Mosque, Film City, Kanheri Caves, Jogeshwari Caves, Mahalaxmi Race Course and Elephanta Island. Tourists can visit several waterfalls like Lingmala waterfall, Chinaman's waterfall and the Dhobi waterfalls. Nature lovers can enjoy the beautiful sight of the mountains and green valley from over 30 viewpoints including Wilson Point (highest), Bombay Point, Elphinstone Point and Kate's Point. Mahabaleshwar has moderate climate throughout the year. There is no shortage of accommodation options in Mahabaleshwar which include high-end, middle-range and budget hotels. The distance from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar, a hill station, is around 247 km (Via Mahad). The convenient way to reach Mahabaleshwar is to take a State Transport or private bus or hire a taxi from Mumbai. Taxis will take four to five hours to reach the hill station. All types of State transport and private buses are available at regular intervals from Dadar East, Sion or Vashi. The Volvo bus ride from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar will take six hours and will cost around Rs 500. An ordinary a/c bus will cost Rs 200. Pune International Airport, situated about 120 km away from Mahabaleshwar, is the nearest accessible airbase from here. But going to Pune first by air and then take a bus or taxi to Mahabaleshwar from there is not convenient for travellers going from Mumbai. The nearest railway station is Wather, which is situated about 62 km from Mahabaleshwar. Established by the British in the early 19th century, Ooty is one of the most popular hill stations in southern India. Ooty was the summer headquarters of the Madras government. Ooty is situated in the mountain ranges of Nilgiris, in the state of Tamil Nadu. Ooty is visited for the tourist spots like the Ooty Lake, Thread Garden, Botanical Gardens, Rose Gardens, Doddabetta Peak, St Stephens Church and the Tribal Research Center Museum. Nearby destinations like Wellington, Wayanad, Mysore, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Bandipur, Coimbatore, Conoor, Kotagiri and Pykara Lake can be visited from Ooty. Ooty has a pleasant climate throughout the year. The distance between Coimbatore to Ooty is about 84 km. Ooty is one of the best weekend destinations from Coimbatore, not just for its proximity and connectivity. It takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes to cover this distance. From Coimbatore one has to follow the Coimbatore-Ooty-Gundlepet highway or the SH 181 that takes you through towns like Thudiyalur, Periyanaikanpalayam, Karamadai, Metupalayam, Coonoor before finally reaching Ooty. From Mettupalayam the road passes through some beautiful hills and valleys. State transport and private buses are available from Coimbatore to Ooty for this journey. The cost of a seat may vary from Rs. 80 for an ordinary bus and Rs. 200 for a deluxe bus. One can also book a taxi from Coimbatore to Ooty that will cost about Rs. 2500 and the double for a round trip. This is a better option if you are travelling with a lot of luggage and family. One can also take the risk of driving your own car if you like hill driving. There are viewpoints all along the way so that you can enjoy the beautiful scenery around. Mahabalipuram is just 55 km away from Chennai. Mahabalipuram is one of the best weekend destinations from Chennai, not just for its proximity and connectivity, but also for its architectural grandeur. The best way to travel is by taking a bus from the Chennai bus stand to Mahabalipuram. TNSTC ply buses on the route to Mahabalipuram on a regular basis. Private operators have a/c and non a/c buses plying between the two towns and take an hour to reach Mahabalipuran from Chennai. The cost of a bus ride may vary from Rs. 30 for an ordinary bus to Rs. 80 for a deluxe seater. If one is travelling with kids and elders hiring a cab from Chennai to Mahabalipuram is the best option. For a round trip the charge will be in the range of Rs 2000. If you plan to drive yourself, it will be a very rewarding experience what with this 55 km stretch being along the Bay of Bengal. The East Coast Road also known as SH 49 is known for its smooth roads and excellent views. There are numerous restaurants, petrol bunks and other amenities on the way for your convenience. Mahabalipuram does not have a railway station. Chengalpattu is the nearest railway station that connects Chennai to Mahabalipuram. One can catch a train from Chennai get down at Chengelpettu and then take a cab or bus to Mahabalipuram. Chengelpettu is 31 km away from Mahabalipuram. You can catch any train on the Chennai-Trichy route. The trains that run between Chennai and Chengelpettu are the Guruvayur Express (16127), Mangalore Express (16107), Bhubaneswar-Rameswaram Weekly Express (18496), Nagercoil Express (0637), Trichendur Express (16735) and Vaigai Express (12635).
