It was also the famous dwelling place and khanqah of Shiekh Salim Chishti, the famous Sufi saint whom Akbar revered for blessing him with child.
Akbar started building his own mausoleum, but his son Jehangir completed his tomb, popularly known as Sikandra after Sikandra Lodi. The tomb has three-storeyed red sandstone minarets and beautiful gardens surrounding the mausoleum.

Agra Fort is similar in layout to Red Fort in Delhi. The fort was built by Emperor Akbar during the period from 1565 to 1571. The main monuments located within the Fort are Anguri Bagh Gardens, Diwan-i-Khas, Jahangir's Palace, Ladies' Bazaar, Moti Masjid, Nagina Masjid and Sheesh Mahal.
Fatehpur Sikri, another 16th century monument, was also built under the orders of Emperor Akbar. Fatehpur Sikri, which means the 'City of Victory', includes Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India, and temples. Fatehpur Sikri is situated about 38 km from Agra.
Agra has some beautiful parks and gardens, including Mehtab Bagh. The back of the Taj Mahal is visible from this garden. Other parks and gardens in Agra included Soami Bagh, Shah Jahan Park and Dayal Bagh. Agra has two popular museums, Spiritual Museum and Taj Mahal Museum.
Other attractions in Agra are Itmad-ud-Daula, Sikandra, Soor Sarovar, Diwan-i-Am, Buland Darwaza, Chini Ka Rauza and Tomb of Akbar. Itmad-ud-Daula Tomb is often referred to as 'Baby Taj', due to its similar architecture.
