Kabini - Elephant Dwellings   By: rashmiranjan patil
Kabini is situated in the Nagarhole Wild Life Sanctuary, by the backwaters of the Kabini River, in the state of Karnataka. Located at a distance of about 70 km from Mysore and 200 km from Bangalore, Kabini covers an area of about 580 sq km. According to the Project Elephant reports there are around 6000 elephants in the contiguous stretches of the Kabini forests comprising of Nagarhole, Bandipur, Biligirirangana and Mudumalai. Other than the wild elephants, a lot of other animals roam freely in Kabini. Mouse deer, spotted deer, sloth bear, gaur, sambhar, tiger and panther are some of the other animals found here. Other than the wild animals, birds like painted storks, egrets, herons, ibis, serpent eagle, vultures and a lot of other migratory birds are found in the forests or near the water bodies. The accommodation options in Kabini are limited and most of the available Kabini hotels are in the top bracket for the high-end customers. Jaisalmer is situated in the state of Rajasthan towards the western part near the Thar Desert, close to Indo-Pak boarder. The fort town of Jaisalmer was founded by Maharawal Jaisal in the year 1156 AD after having shifted his capital from Ludharva, 18 km away from Jaisalmer. Gadsisar Lake was built by Maharawal Gadsi in 14th century and is the main source of drinking water for Jaisalmer. There are many small temples and shrines around the lake and boating can be enjoyed. On the approach road to Gadsisar Lake is a gateway known as Tillon ki pol built by a royal courtesan named Tillon. About 45 km from Jaisalmer is the Desert National Park, where you can find wild life like blackbuck, chinkara, wolf, Indian fox, desert fox, hare and desert cat. Just 17 km from Jaisalmer is the Akal Fossil Forest, where fossilized remnants of a 180 million year old forest is found. One can also avail a Jaisalmer package where you enjoy a camel ride at the dunes at Sam and Khuri or include other spots like Kuldhara, Mool Sagar and Bada Bagh. Jaisalmer is connected by broad gauge and meter gauge tracks. Jaisalmer is also connected to the rest of state by well-maintained roads.
