Southern Railways Travelling Made Easy
By: soni sajjan
Indian Southern Railways is one among the 16 Indian Railway zones that was started in Independent India. It was established on April 14, 1951 when the three state railways including Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, South Indian Railway and Mysore State Railway merged together. It was basically created during the times when British ruled India and when the Great Southern India Railway Co. was started in Britain. Initially, it had its headquarters in Tiruchirapalli.
Presently, the headquarters of Southern Railways are situated in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. The Indian Southern railways are divided into 6 divisions which are: Chennai, Salem, Thiruvananthapuram, Tiruchirapalli and Palakkad. The railway covers a lot of states including Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and some segments of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Annually, more than 500 million passengers travel through the Indian Southern Railway network. This zone is different from other Indian Railway zones as it gets its revenue from passengers and not from freight.
In order to manage things in a better way, the Railway Board approved the creation of new Railway Division 2005. Indian Southern Railways is a benchmark in terms of train availabilityand railway reservation. The passengers can confirm the train fares, seat availability and routes in real time and even receive alerts about the schedules. Passengers can even book I- and e- tickets. I-tickets are delivered to the passengers via a courier, while e-tickets can be printed by the passengers at home.
The passengers are provided with all the facilities, thereby catering to the need of the passengers. Major divisions of the Southern zone are Broad Gauge lines and a less portion is the meter gauge, and there has been a consistent improvement in converting them to the Broader Gauge lines.
In addition to this, the platform coverings and the catering stalls are also improved. In order to prevent accidents, there will be automated signal system installed on the platforms. The central station in Chennai caters to more than 1 million passengers each day. The zones that yield the highest revenue, namely, Coimbatore and Tiruppur, are currently being integrated into the Salem division. The Sallem division is the most recent division of Indian Southern Railways that has been created out from Palakkad and Tiruchirapalli divisions. Southern Railways is a great means of convenience for the people of all the divisions and zones that it covers.(read
