The Value Of Consumable Gifts
By: jeremy wendell
A possible solution to relieve stresses on both the gift shopper and the receiver is to give a consumable like a luxury food. It doesn't need to cost a fortune; it just needs to be a noticeable improvement over the regular daily fare. The receiver can savor it, or re-gift it, guilt-free, to somebody else who will appreciate it. Added bonus: it's a consumable. If your consumable gift is enjoyed by the recipient, you can keep giving the same present year after year: one small yearly stress handily eliminated.(read

Is Manuka Honey Worth The Price?
By: jeremy wendell
In recent years honey has seen an upswing in popularity as a healthy alternative to processed sugars. No honey has exemplified the insatiable demand for honey as a health food more dramatically than manuka honey. Exports (measured by dollars) of manuka honey from New Zealand quintupled from 2010 to 2020. Manuka honey can be found in almost any shop that carries healthy foods, at prices up to, and even exceeding $50 for a small 250g jar, several times the price of “regular” honey. At these prices, it begs the question, is manuka honey worth it?(read

Wendell Honey Farm Struggles After Devastating Winter And Spring
By: jeremy wendell
The 2021-2022 winter and spring of 2022 were devastating for Canadian beekeepers. I posted previously on how the extreme honeybee colony winter losses affected beekeepers across Canada. In this follow-up post I will update on how the ripple effect is not only making it challenging to make a honey crop this year, but is threatening to carry forward into next year, even if we do see a return to more “normal” weather and beekeeping conditions.(read

Wendell Estate Honey Becomes First Canadian Brand Verified By Genuhoney®'s Certification Of Authenticity

The Food Safety News first broke the widespread practice of honey adulteration in 2011 with an investigative journalism report titled “Tests Show Most Store Honey Isn't Honey”. There are several ways unscrupulous honey dealers, and even some dishonest beekeepers, boost profits by minimizing the amounts of natural honey in their product.(read

I'm Pregnant. Can I Eat Raw Honey?
By: jeremy wendell
Yes, you can! Pregnancy itself does not affect one's ability to eat honey, raw or otherwise. A caveat is expectant moms with, or at increased risk of, gestational diabetes. More on this below. I'm not sure where this idea that raw honey should not be eaten by pregnant women comes from, but it although it is common, it doesn't seem to be based in facts or evidence.(read

What Is The Difference Between Organic Honey And Regular Honey?
By: jeremy wendell
Many of us choose to pay a little more for certified organic foods when shopping for groceries. For some, this is a choice for personal health: organic foods are less likely to contain harmful contaminants. For others the choice may be to support more natural, sustainable agricultural methods. For many both aspects come into play. While organic certification of food products seems like it should be straightforward, it gets complicated when talking about honey.(read

Canadian Beekeepers Facing Severe Winter Losses
By: jeremy wendell
Earning a living as a commercial beekeeper has never been easy. Unfortunately for Canadian beekeepers, 2022 will be especially challenging due to an exceptionally high rate of honeybee colony losses over the 2021-22 winter. The Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists (CAPA) has been tracking winter colony losses among commercial beekeepers since the coining of “Colony Collapse Disorder” in 2007. From the 2006-07 winter to 2020-21 winter colony losses among commercial beekeepers averaged 26% with a peak of 35% and 34% in 2007-08 and 2008-09 respectively.(read
