Winning at soccer is no different than winning at anything else in life. Whether you want to write a book, learn to fly a plane or move up the corporate ladder, the game plan is the same. The common denominators are: hard work, determination and dedication. You know what your goal is, now work hard and make it happen.

First, know the game and then make your own personal game plan. Whether it is the book writing or winning at soccer, you have to set small goals and work hard to accomplish them one by one. To write a book, perhaps you would write an outline, deciding who the characters are and what would happen to them. For soccer, the first, small goal might be to learn all of the basic rules for play.

Next, you will need to go to your second goal: If you have not signed up for a team, then make that your second goal. If you are able to choose which team you will be on, then select one based on your rapport with the coach and other players. (Do not select a soccer team based on uniform color if you expect to win.) A good working relationship with the players and coach will ensure that you can focus ...
... on your play on the field, rather than squabbles in the locker room.

Third, to win at soccer, you need to make sure that you want to win for the right reasons. Do you want to win because you love the sport? Is it to breed a spirit of competition tempered with good sportsmanship? Or is there some ulterior motive behind your desire to win at soccer?

If you are playing the game to catch the eye of the opposite sex, or to gain the approval of one or both of your parents, there is more to worry about than learning to win at soccer. Soccer is a sport, a game. It is not the key to everlasting happiness, or the path to enlightenment. Play it well, take the lessons it gives to you and use them throughout your life. Practice and work hard, on and off the field. Listen to what your coach has to say, and develop a thicker skin if criticism bothers you. Watch the players around you and see which ones you admire- and which ones you think that you could help. Mentoring can sometimes be a good way to learn other aspects of the game. If you do not understand a diagrammed play or a rule, go online and do research until you do. Ask questions. Watch tapes of the professionals as well as catching other games in your area. Can you see things that you would like to learn? Can you spot the things that the teams are doing incorrectly? Are they things that you have problems with as well? Learn from your mistakes, and never ever stop trying to improve.
