Fort Erie is a beautiful town of about 30,000 residents located on the Niagara River, directly across from the city of Buffalo, New York. The town is named for a British military outpost that still stands nearby; Fort Erie was the first fort the British built after the Seven Years'' War. And this namesake of the town also provides its first attraction; the rich history of the fort draws in visitors of all ages. Fort Erie offers tours of the buildings and the surrounding grounds so visitors can witness 200 years of history come alive before their very eyes. Currently, Fort Erie and all of the Niagara parks are preparing for a celebration of the bicentennial of the War of 1812; many special events will commemorate 200 years of peace.

But the town of Fort Erie has grown to much more than just a settlement outside of the outpost. One of the other most well-known and unique features of Fort Erie is the Fort Erie Race Track. For more than 100 years, the track has been showcasing high-quality thoroughbred racing, and it is the current home of the Prince of Wales Stakes. Races are held every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday ...
... as well as the first Saturday of each month.

For those who would rather get some exercise than watch, Crystal Beach beckons with sparkling sand and refreshing waters. Elegant cottages dot the coastline, providing breathtaking vistas for those observing the countless boats traversing the waters. When the sun sets, though, the excitement is just beginning. Crystal Beach offers specialty shops, an active waterfront nightlife, antique markets and fine dining.

Making the most of the environment is a big part of tourism in Fort Erie. Visitors can jet ski down the Niagara River, kayak up Black Creek, or windsurf at Thunder Bay. But visitors can also slow the pace down when experiencing nature''s bounty as well. Fort Erie''s newest attraction, ZOOZ, offers more than 100 acres of parkland and some of the world''s most interesting animals. There''s also a children''s playground, family fun area, art exhibits and interactive displays.

And that''s not all that Fort Erie has to offer. Any trip through the province of Ontario would be incomplete without a trip to experience the wonders of Fort Erie. Bonny Kominek wrote this article while on a holiday booked with Dialaflight who provide flight to Canada and other desinations.
