Flat belts have been a part of mechanism since ancient times. Their usage is varied and wide. They are mostly used for power transmission and conveying systems. They are made up of leather, canvas, balata and rubber. The flat belt is used in factories and workshops, where moderate amount of power transmission is to be done, from one pulley to another when they are not more than 8 meters away. Initially only leather was used to produce flat belts but then it took a shift to rubber. Flat belts were used for farming, mining applications such as water pumps, electricity generators etc. By development in various fields new types of belts came up which replaced flat belts and also overcome the drawbacks but still Flat belts are used today on a large scale. The flat belt is a simple system of power transmission. It can deliver high power at high speed but are bulky, space consuming. Well, all types of industrial rubber belts have their own features and importance. Recent developments in flat-belt technology have overcome their previous drawbacks of high tension. New designs and advances ...
... materials have made both low and high-power transmission practical and cost efficient, and at speeds that usually exceed other belt designs.

Flat Belt conveyors is that in which the belt runs flat on the carrying side over a set of idlers. Such conveyors are suitable for low capacity, low speed requirement and for handling heavy bulky unit goods. High performance flat belts are much in demand. Developments here include sticky yet abrasion-resistant rubber compounds that eliminate the need for high tension to grip pulleys. These materials also allow lower shaft and bearing loads to transmit significant power. The strongest flat belts now transmit over 100 hp/in. of belt width.

Flat belt pulleys are used in transmission systems that are driven by flat belts, typically high-speed, low-power applications in textiles, paper making, and office machinery such as computer printers. Flat belts require flat pulleys and flat pulley idlers. They do not necessarily require grooved flat belt pulleys. A flat pulley idler can also be used for the back side of a conventional V-belt. Flat belt drive pulleys apply motive power to the belt.

There are many cons of flat belts high chance of slip off, compared to v-belts flat belts require significantly greater of pretension to transmit a certain torque without slip, flat belts are not advisable for high outputs at high speeds, the flat belt cannot transmit high power as timing belt does, they are bulky, for a given transmission, flat belt drive requires a wide pulley.

Well pros are important to be considered as usage is high, the flat belts are very simple in design and cheaper, smooth running and quiet running, flat belts can be used for long distances, even up to 15 m, precise alignments of shafts and pulleys are not as critical with flat belts, the periodic adjustment of the belt tension and belt replacement, when it is worn out, is easier in the case of flat belts, Flat belts are and very flexible and, therefore, they have the ability to bend and twist on pulleys and follow very tortuous paths.

Companies have now started producing excellent flat belts, such as Polyamide, Poly Sprint, Tangential and Super Endless belts with distinguish features Energy saving, Service life 2-5 times longer than V belts, Minimum maintenance, Smooth running, Resistant to abrasion, easy and simple installation, cost effective which are not only long lasting but also extremely wear resistant which increase their productivity.
