The Truth About Children's Preschool Books

How does it go again? In the great green room there was a telephone, a red balloon and a picture of the cow jumping over the moon, and there were three little bears sitting on chairs and two little kittens and a pair of mittens
And then this dance inspiring book; Stomp your feet and clap your hands everybody's ready for the barnyard dance, bow to the horse, bow to the cow, twirl with the pig if you know how
Then there is this one "Jesus loves me as I eat; oranges, biscuits, eggs and meat. Apple juice is in my cup, you can watch me drink it up
Do any of these childrens preschool books spark old memories, or maybe even of a story time you had today? Ah yes, the children story time, with countless preschool books filled with bright colored pages. There seems to be a distinct time period when the one or two year old is finally getting bored with the one word books. Whole new vistas of reading open up as you graduate to catchy rhymes that leave you wondering about the sanity of the author, or maybe the sanity of the parents who have to read them.
Of course, once you start reading childrens ...
... preschool books, you are virtually held captive for the next couple of years. The children follow you with their chubby, precious fingers gripping those thick cardboard pages begging to hear the contents again. Does this thought sound familiar, "if it takes me 20 seconds to read this book then maybe they will stop asking for 5 minutes and then I can use the bathroom in peace." Don't bet on it! For some reason, the more you read a story to children, the more they want to hear it. Then before you know it, those hypnotic childrens preschool books are the only thing that keeps going through your head as you try to fall asleep at night.
Okay, so it's all kind of silly when you are in the midst of it, but have you ever stopped to think about the content of all those childrens preschool books? Furthermore, have you considered how the books impact the soul and spirit of the beautiful child sitting on your lap? Christian or not, books have a profound, lasting impact in our lives, young and old people alike.
Not long after we were blessed with children, I began to tell them a Christian children story before bed time. I was amazed at how even being just preschool aged, they would listen so intently and remember the various characters and story lines. Children are sponges for learning all throughout their early years, and the preschool years are no exception.
Given their appetite for learning, I want to encourage you to seriously consider the content of the children's preschool books that you choose to introduce to your children.
Here are a few questions as you contemplate what childrens preschool books to read.
Will these books speak encouragement to children?
Will these books point children to the magnificence of Jesus Christ?
Will these books let my children know how loved they are?
Will these books lay a foundation for truth that can be built upon as the children mature?
All children are an absolute gift from God. Somehow in His infinite wisdom, He has seen fit to entrust them to our care for a short period of time.
I've heard it said that being a good steward means using someone else's resources to accomplish someone else's agenda. Oh, that we would be such stewards of God's incredible creation of children.
One of the magnificent treasures of being new creations in Christ Jesus is that our creative possibilities for being stewards of the children entrusted to our care are endless.
I encourage you to dream of ways to delight the children in your life with a Christian children story that comes from your heart. Who knows, perhaps one day your stories could be turned into a children's preschool book.
Remember, God is for us. He is passionate about our joy and success as parents. He has gone to great lengths to give us a Helper, the Holy Spirit. Now, all the resources in the universe are at our disposal to do His good will.
Be encouraged fellow Christian caregiver of children. Your task is a noble one.
So, when you find yourself reading the same book for the 100th time, and it's nearly impossible to shake the rhyme from your head, don't give up! The often monotonous reading time you are spending with the children now, will be well worth it in the long run.
Psalm 127:3
"Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward."
May God help us view children the way He does. Furthermore, may He give us the grace to become like children, that we might enter the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 18:3)
