How To Take Care Of Teeth And Gums Naturally

We all know just how important dental health is. In fact, most people avail of expensive and extensive treatments just to ensure that their teeth and gums are in tiptop shape. But did you know that simple, inexpensive and natural ways are already enough to maintain a great smile and healthy gums well on to your golden years? Here are five easy tips to help you take care of your teeth and gums.
1. Teeth Brushing
This might seem second-nature, especially when we reach adulthood, but many people are not doing it the right way. When brushing, it should include the back of the mouth, gums, front and back surfaces of the teeth, biting surfaces of the teeth, tongue, and inside of cheeks. This should all be done in two minutes at least twice a day.
2. Teeth Flossing
Regular brushing should always be accompanied with regular flossing. When done properly, it can remove food particles and plaque that a toothbrush cannot reach. Focus between your teeth and your gum line during the process. When cutting floss, make sure that you have lots of excess to wrap around your fingers and hold taut as you work on it.
3. Proper ...
... Diet
The food and drinks you take in and consume have a big effect on your teeth. As much as possible, stay away from sugary foods like candy, cookies, cakes and gum. Be aware of food with hidden sugar like dried fruit, crackers and bread. If you really have to consume sugary beverages, drink them through a straw so your teeth are not exposed to them.
4. Avoid Grinding
Tooth grinding happens when you gnash your upper and lower teeth together. This is usually an unconscious action, with some people doing this in their sleep. If you grind, try to be more aware of your actions. Release the tension by stretching your mouth and holding it open for a few seconds. Your dentist might recommend that you use a grinding shield.
5. Know Gum Disease
When detected early enough, gum disease can be easily treated. If you feel any kind of soreness or itching in your gums, or if they become swollen and bleed even with gentle brushing, then there is a good chance that you are developing gum disease. Other symptoms include mouth sores and halitosis or bad breath.
Aside from focusing on your teeth and gums, you should also understand how other health problems affect your oral health. If you have heart disease, diabetes, cancer or other disease, talk to your dentist about your dental health risks. During your regular appointments, you can ask him for more tips on how to protect your teeth and gums.
