Wine is a class apart alcoholic beverage simply because of the fact that its taste and flavor changes, by the way, is served and even the glassware in which it is served. Let's check out some of its most common glassware used to get the optimum flavor and enjoyment out of it. In general, glassware is the term used for the wide range of glass containers used for drinking.

Opting between crystal and glass stemware

Crystal is nothing but a type of glass with special refractive properties. Here lead monoxide is mixed with the glass in varying amount depending on the geographical location. For instance, it is usually 1% in U.S and about 30% in Europe. Today, you also find lead-free crystal ware which has zinc and magnesium oxide to refract light. There are predominantly two reasons why crystals are highly preferred as wine glasses. Foremost, due to light refraction, the glassware sparkles and thus gives an extra edge to the liquor look and vibe while drinking. Secondly, since the minerals had been added, it becomes sturdy enough to craft extremely thin glassware. In contrast, glasses cannot be so thin.

If you really want to enjoy this liquor to its full potential, it must always be served via a decanter or via crystal wine carafes instead of straight from the bottle. This allows the liquor to breathe. They provide with a sufficient space area to oxygenize and aerate. This is particularly the case for a red wine whose flavor changes dramatically when decanted. All bitter tastes and sediments filter away, and you can taste real smooth red wine. Initially, a carafe was just a vessel to hold liquid, but today they are available in various designs and shapes that look very stylish. You can pour decant wine into it and then serve your guests or even enjoy from it.

Wine glasses

You will be surprised to know how important right these glasses are to the full flavor potential of any wine. Not only is the correct serving temperature important, but each type of these requires a specific type of serving glass. Now let us understand the glasses suitable for each type of wine.

Red wine glasses - Large glasses are best for serving red wine. These glasses would have fuller and rounder bowls with a larger opening compared to other glasses of similar capacities. This allows you to dip your nose into the glass and inhale and enjoy its aroma. There is a specific type of glass known as the Bordeaux glass which is not only taller than the normal glass but also has a smaller bowl. This is ideal for full-bodied, heavier red wines like Merlot and cabernets. Another style called as Burgundy glass is meant for lighter full-bodied like the Pinot Noir.

White wine glasses - The bowl of these glasses are more U-shaped and upright compared to the red wine glass so that aromas can be easily released as well as the cooler temperature can be maintained. This is because white wines taste best as cold. The glasses for younger whites have a slightly larger opening while those for more mature whites are straighter and taller.

Sparkling wine glasses - These glasses are popularly referred to as flutes or champagne flutes. These are extremely upright and narrow with a long stem. This helps keep the carbonation within the glass and retain its flavor. Thus, it retains its flavor and taste for a longer period of time.

Dessert wine glasses - These are typically used to serve wines after dinner along with desserts. Often these are sweeter than desserts and have a much higher alcoholic content. Thus, these are much smaller than other types of glasses to facilitate small servings which would otherwise overwhelm your taste palate. They come in all shapes and sizes though all have small, compact shape to accentuate the rich aromas and sweet flavors.

Manufacturing English full lead crystal glassware since 1913, Brierley Hill Crystal is the oldest family owned crystal brand of UK. It still offers the best of the traditional English designs and craftsmanship on all its items be it crystal wine carafes or crystal wine glasses or any other crystal items.
