Asthma is a condition wherein the airway passage to the lungs is narrow & filled with mucus. This interferes with almost every physical activity and could even lead to fatal asthma attacks. Some of the common signs & symptoms of the disease include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain or tightness
- Coughing & wheezing
- Difficulty in sleeping
The condition is caused by a number of environmental, lifestyle and genetic factors. While it is impossible to alter the genetic conditions, the environmental & lifestyle conditions can be changed to ensure that the asthma attacks are prevented. Some of the lifestyle-related preventive measures prescribed for Asthma patients include:
1. Cleanliness: Dust, pollen, animal dander etc., are well known asthma triggers, it is important to have clean surroundings with adequate ventilation to ensure you have good clean air but minus the allergens that can trigger an asthma attack.

2. Exercise: Regular exercise helps you strengthen your lungs & heart which can then help you better cope up with asthma attacks. Avoiding exercise due to ...
... asthma can only prove to be detrimental to your own health.

3. Maintaining Appropriate Weight: Excessive weight causes your asthma attacks & symptoms to worsen. There is an increased feeling of breathlessness. Regular exercise helps maintain an adequate weight which is further aided by consuming a healthier diet and staying away from fatty, carbohydrate rich foods.

4. Understanding Your Triggers: Although Asthma is a fairly common condition and effects a large population, the triggers of the disease vary from person to person. It is very important to know and understand the triggers that cause asthma attacks for you – and work towards preventing them.

In addition to lifestyle changes, Asthma also requires support from the family. It is quite a challenging and stress causing condition. The attacks can interfere with everyday tasks and often the triggers may be unavoidable. In such situations, it is imperative for family and close friends to lend their support.
