However, little do many know that Burton is the setting for some less than normal goings on, in fact paranormal activity in the otherwise sleepy town is now being investigated by many on so-called ghost hunting tours. These tours offer an insight into the eerie past of Burton and those brave enough will attempt to track down the town's resident ghosts and experience the supernatural happenings that led to the tours' introduction.

The tours were founded by Chris and Tracey Campbell-Brown and they work alongside paranormal investigators who often choose Burton as the base for their studies. They boast a website with information on all of the locations that can be explored during a walk and they boast more than 1,500 site visitors a month; many of whom reside in the US. The eerie walks take place in the evenings, inevitably after dark, and visitors can tour around different parts of the old town as part of a group as the tour leaders tell the sometimes gruesome, sometimes fascinating stories behind each place.

The Washlands Tour takes place over the duration of an hour and while wandering the haunted area, your ...
... tour guide will take you back in time with tales from the Dark Ages, the English Civil War and the Wars of the Roses; all of which saw townsfolk endure barbarous acts and many unpleasant deaths. Their torturous past and grisly murder is what many people consider to be the reason why their souls stay on in the town as ghosts. Unable to proceed to the other side, many remain where they suffered and the Washlands Tour is hugely popular and if reviews are anything to go by, tantalisingly scary! The Town Tour is a popular choice, and the walk takes ‘ghost hunters' around the haunted streets of the town to the places where the last Christian martyr was horrifically burned alive and to where the ghost of the so-called White Lady has been spotted. This tour also takes avid ghost hunters to the self-proclaimed most haunted house in Europe and again the creepy expedition takes around an hour.

Perhaps the most relevant trip is the Pub Tour as pubs and brewing are synonymous with the town, and ghosts have been reportedly seen in many of Burton's watering holes. The mixture of beer and ghost stories may sound too good to be true but the tour of the haunted pubs is arguably the most popular, and you can be sure to see a spirit on this trip. Last, but by no means least, the Sinai House Tour may be the most scary and for those seeking a genuinely spine tingling journey, this is the trip for you. The house boasts a history that dates back 2,000 years making it an obvious location for paranormal activity. Keen hunters may experience knocking on the walls, pushing and pulling sensations and the strange smell of burning. Previous vigils in the cellar have led to unusual happenings as car alarms set off for no apparent reason and electrical equipment stalling. The ghosts here are a mixed lot, from a murderous monk and an angry abbot to a regiment of soldiers and murdered witches.

Whatever reason you happen to end up in Burton, if you are a fan of the supernatural or simply want to do something different during your stay, taking a ghost tour will certainly offer you an insight into Burton that has never been seen before. The spirits and ghosts await!
