A continuous electrical supply is often critical in many business premises and definitely, makes life much easier and comfortable in any residential premises. Usually you would see people rush to buy both new and used generators at the time of a major storm or other such electric crisis. However, at such emergency times, you may not always get the right and correct generator which makes your entire investment go down the drain. Thus, it’s important that you spend time and purchase a generator thoughtfully before any crisis so as to make it a sound investment. The following tips would assist you in nailing the right piece:-

Used or new generators

Based on your needs, requirements, and budget, you first need to decide if you want an old or a new generator for yourself. The new generator would cost more but would come with a standard warranty of one to three years, would likely be a new model and is likely to last longer. In contrast, the old would be cheaper but would not come with any warranty and may not be as reliable as a new one. Thus, if your requirement is heavy, you should ideally go for a new unit, but ...
... if the requirement is only occasional and light, it might make sense to invest in an old piece.

Type of generator

Once, you have decided upon it; you need to choose the type of generator. These are mainly of three types which are:

•Standby or permanent generators - Having a large power output and connected to the utility system of the given premise, they are an excellent choice of various units need to operate in case of a power outage like that in a hospital, data factory, industrial premises, a large house, etc. They also make an excellent choice for areas having frequent power outages. However, these are expensive and require a professional installation.

•Portable generators - Smaller and less powerful, they have the obvious advantage of being moved to different locations as desired. This does not require professional help for installation and can easily keep essentials things running for a short period. The can also be easily connected to keep critical units working. They mostly run on propane gas and can be used anywhere on the premises. They can also be connected to the utility system via a transfer switch. They tend to cost less.

•Inverter generators - Relatively quieter and lighter, these make an ideal choice for specialized uses like in camping or to some power appliances. These are not very effective as a single source of energy in any emergency situation.

Generator size

Generators are rated on their power output as kilowatts per hour. A generator which produces about 5,000 kilowatts per hour can easily meet the power requirements of a small or medium house for the short duration. To calculate the strength you require, you can best consult an expert or try by arriving at a rough estimate yourself. On any appliance, you would find printed power usage; You can note these from the list of all appliances that you intend to run the generator. Once you have added up the total, you need to add some more for surges at startups for a unit like a refrigerator. Again generator should never be run to its full power as it may get destroyed easily. Thus, you should opt for a generator that is 30 to 40 percent of higher capacity than that of your requirement list.

Fuel choice

This is again something that you need to consider. Standby and Portable generators usually run on liquid propane or natural gas. However, most generators run on diesel or biodiesel. You can choose but keep in mind the type of fuel that would give you maximum efficiency in terms of energy consumption. Some require little fuel to run for a higher time which others may use higher amount of fuel.
