Mallorca Sightseeing On Wheels
Mallorca is the perfect size to be visited by car and one of the loveliest areas is the North West Coast which boasts beautiful scenery as well as rich culture and history. You need not worry about finding a mode of transportation because there are plenty of operators offering car hire. Mallorca will change the way you drive as speed will be your last priority as you soak up the wonders around you.
If you enjoy driving at a leisurely pace then this is the perfect route for you, which starts in the small town of Puerto Pollensa. The North West is better known as the Serra de Transmontana, named after the mountain range which starts in Pollensa and ends in Andratx.
Your journey will start in Pollensa and it will be a short drive in terms of distance but it will seem much longer due to the narrow, winding roads. Your first pit stop should be at the Monastery of Lluc, which is famous for its statue of the Virgin, ?La Moreneta?. The story goes that a shepherd by the name of Lluc found a colored statue of the Virgin and took it to a monk. The monk was stunned to see the statue glow and this is why it found a new home ...
... at the monastery.
The surrounding mountains are beautiful and are perfect for hiking or a simple stroll. The town also features a Renaissance-Baroque church that was designed by Jaume Blanquer and built between 1622 and 1684. The only problem is that you could easily spend the whole day here taking in the beauty of nature combined with the artistry of man.
Your next stop should be the Port of Sa Calobra which boasts a beautiful cove, the Torrent de Pareis, a wonderful spot for swimming. Unfortunately, in full season it is packed with little room to move therefore the best time to visit it would be before the tourist crowds arrive.
A little more driving and you will end up in Valldemosa. However, before reaching Valldemosa you should consider stopping in Deia to visit the small church where Robert Graves, the writer, is buried. In Valldemosa you will find the Royal Charter-house of Jesus of Nazareth which was built in the early 14th century. In the 1830''s the Spanish government seized many monasteries and churches which were subsequently sold to private owners. The Royal Charter-house served as a winter holiday retreat for Frederic Chopin and George Sand, his lover, in 1838.
There are many more lovely little villages that can be visited en route and a car is the only way to really get to know Mallorca. You will have the opportunity to explore and discover all of this beautiful island''s secrets, including why it is the favorite holiday destination for over 12 million Spaniards every year. When you have had enough of the country life then drive on to Palma de Mallorca, a city that is as trendy as they come with great entertainment, shopping and restaurants. Bonny Kominek is very fond of the Balearic islands and has been going to Mallorca for years. Getting car hire Mallorca is essntial, you can get cheap car hire Mallorca from Ritmocars.co.uk
