In the US, the Liberty is known as the Subaru Legacy, and a new version with a substantial facelift has been revealed. This version will probably have a lot in common with the next Subaru Liberty that we will see here in Australia. Bearing that in mind, let’s take a closer look at what has been revealed and when we may see the 2018 Subaru Liberty in Australia.

Exterior Changes:

This 2018 revision makes an immediate first impression with features, such as a revised front end, new C shaped headlamps, daytime running lights, a chromed winged slat, a new bumper, LED fog lights and a wider grille. Around the back, there is only one major change, a redesigned bumper to show off the width of the car.

The New Interior:

The interior changes are arguably more subtle than those made externally. The main highlights are a piano black trim, more dashboard stitching, silver coloured bezels, a new clock, a climate control system, control dial temperature displays and a sportier steering wheel. ... has gone from 7” to 8” with new features, such as improved voice recognition, a faster CPU, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality and smartphone mirroring.

Under the Bonnet:

The US version of this large sedan will have an unchanged powerplant under the bonnet. Both the 2.5 litre four cylinder and 3.6 litre six cylinder boxer engines are still present. As one would expect, both Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and all wheel drive (AWD) are standard features. At the moment there are no details available to confirm that the same engines will be used on the Australian Liberty.

Other Features:

The US Subaru Legacy has some other interesting features, such as: LED headlights that respond to steering, automatic high beam, new paint choices, automatic rear braking, reshaped wing mirrors, thicker rear wheel aprons, revised front windows, noise reduction and new alloy wheel designs. Significant tweaks have also been made to the steering, throttle, transmission and suspension to enhance the driving experience.

Australian Availability:

The 2018 Subaru Legacy will go on sale in the US from the middle of this year. We cannot expect to see the new Subaru Liberty for sale here until early in 2018 at the earliest. It’s expected that the specifications will be very similar to the US version, but that has not been officially confirmed.
