A camera is the photographer's best friend and in the initial days, when you begin this journey, there are no other equipment you would need. It takes time to master and hone the skills with your camera and until you are well verse with how to use it, you should not lose your focus. You should not worry about not having the best of equipment right from the start. However, to achieve a certain effects or apply different techniques, having the right equipment is essential. Long exposure is one such technique where additional equipment are a must.

A manual and bulb mode camera:

It is highly obvious that you need a camera to start off with, but to make long exposure work, you need a slow shutter speed. For this you need a camera that allows you to adjust the ISO, shutter speed and aperture manually. Since all the shots will require different shutter speeds, it is crucial for you to have a camera that allows you top adjust this and other parameters that will affect the quality of the image. A basic DSLR camera will give you these functions. But, to make the most of these features, we recommend you join one of the many good photography courses ...
... in India that will help you with a hands on experience along with an in depth knowledge of camera operations.

Bulb mode is another beneficial option that will help you take shots that need exposure for 30 seconds or more. With this mode, you can expose an image for as along as you want. The total time you keep the camera button pressed, it continues to take the image.

A tripod:

Landscape photography is one genre, where you cannot actually do without a tripod. Most of the times, to capture the beauty, you are working with slow shutter speeds and keeping the camera in your hand is definitely not feasible. There are options to lay it on the ground or on the rocks but that certainly limits the range making the entire process unstable.

There is no need to spend thousands of dollars on high end tripods with the best make but it is a good idea to avoid the cheap aluminum ones from the local electronic store too. The best idea is to invest in the ones that are sturdy enough to be used in any weather conditions. Be it a river with high currents or a windy evening, your tripod should have the strength to handle it all.

Neutral density filters:

They are darkened filters that are placed in front of the lens, to expose the sensor to light for a longer time. These filters are available in different strengths that dictate how much you need to strengthen the exposure time for a well exposed image. Compared to doing this without using ND filters, this method allows you to maintain razor sharp quality even with much longer exposures. To learn more about these filters and other such equipments, taking digital photography tutorials is a good idea.

A remote shutter to capture the images of moving objects just at the right time and cardboard to cover the viewfinder are some other things you can experiment with. However, learning is a never ending process and similar is the case with photography. The more you explore, the better you become.
