We may not pay attention to the fact, but there is plenty of truth in the statement, ‘It does matter what glass you choose to drink wine from’. If you go about tasting, you can find the tasting as worst in a Styrofoam cup and equally bad in a plastic cup. Drink it from a glass stemware, its taste will change and drink from a fine crystal stemware, its taste will rise to an altogether different level. Crystal wine glasses form the ultimate in fine dining and appreciating the true worth and flavors of any wine.
Main types of wine glasses

Today, these crystal glasses are also manufactured separately for enjoying different types of wines. They are major of four different types –

• Crystal glasses meant for drinking red wine are extensive and tall to facilitate savoring the niceties.

• Glasses meant for white wine are smaller than others to maintain its cold temperature at which it was served. Usually, it is a little larger than glass.

• To serve aged white wine, the glass is straight and thinner than the previous glasses. They are popularly called burgundy glasses.

• Finally, ...
... there are the champagne glasses. Thin and tall glasses, they are called flutes and shaped such to allow bubbles to form in the glass of champagne.

Features to look for when buying crystal wine glasses

Now that you understand various types of Wine glasses, it is important to consider some crucial features that make the finest glasses of crystal, ideal for sipping and enjoying.

Clarity

Wine glasses crafted out of crystal must always be clear. While drinking, you should be able to enjoy the deep purple or ruby-red color of the alcohol. If drinking white wine, you should be able to draw pleasure from its lemon gold color or golden amber color. You cannot indulge in its pleasure in a colored glass or that which has a fancy etching.

They interfere with your extracting the maximum pleasure from drinking this alcohol. Ideally, the glass should appear ‘invisible’ and make it the main focus.

Glasses should have a long stem

This type of glasses should ideally have a long stem. Apart from beauty, they serve a very practical purpose. They make the holding of your glass comfortable. Additionally, they prevent the temperature from changing which it will if you hold the glass by its bowl due to the warmth of your hand. The temperature affects the taste of this alcohol. However, if the wine is too cool, you can always hold the glass by its bowl and gently swirl it. Once it gets warmer, you will enjoy it more.

Size of the glass

We have already understood the importance of size and shape of the glass. Ideally, it should never be small except for sherry, port or dessert wine. Its capacity should be enough so that you can enjoy swirling it without any spilling. Swirling helps release the aroma of the alcohol which in turn enhances your experience and pleasure of drinking it. A general thumb rule is 12 ounces but may enthusiastic alcohol drinkers prefer larger goblets of 16 to 24 ounces, especially for red wine.

Thin rim

It is always best to go for thin rim glasses as thick rim makes drinking wine more difficult. A thin rim facilitates this alcohol to glide easily over the rim and into your mouth.

Shape of the glass

The shape of the glass is also important so that this can have some room. Typically for red wine, a generously rounded bowl with a narrower rim allows you to swirl easily to ooze the aroma while the narrower rim focuses the aroma to our nose. The slight inward curve at the top also helps focus the aroma. For white wine, a slimmer bowl is preferred to preserve the temperature at which it is served. Even the top width should be adequate for you to easily put your nose in the glass to take a deep sniff as this is all about aroma.
