Baahubali’s Success Raises The Bar For Tollywood Films

If you have not already heard of the epic historical drama “Baahubali: The Beginning,” then brace yourself for a little surprise. Released across the world on July 10 with versions in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi, and starring Telegu star Prabhas in the title role, “Baahubali” has surpassed and shattered expectations across the board.
Set against the backdrop of a medieval Indian kingdom, Part 1 of this two-part series showcases two feuding brothers in their fight for the throne.
Made by famed Telugu filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, “Baahubali” gained a lot of press early on thanks to being the most expensive Indian movie ever made. With a budget of 250 crore rupees, which is shy of 40 million U.S. dollars, “Baahubali” could have been an epic blockbuster disaster.
Thankfully for everyone involved, the exact opposite has held true, and the movie may well be on its way towards becoming the highest grossing Indian movie of all time. A title currently held by Aamir Khan’s “P.K.” which raked in 120 million USD—but “Baahubali” is still in theaters and has already earned 56 million USD, ...
... placing it eighth on the list of highest grossing Indian movies of all time.
Much of the movie’s success has been credited to the use of stellar special effects and impressive cinematography with many saying that the production scale and value of “Baahubali” are on par with Hollywood films such as “Lord of the Rings.” There will be a sequel to the movie titled “Baahubali: The Conclusion” that is planned for release in 2016, and odds are that the second part of this series will be just as successful as the first.
The success of this Tollywood movie has many in Bollywood paying close attention and many others are a bit worried that there could be a shift in focus from the film industry in Mumbai to the film industry in South India. Only time will tell what the overall impact of “Baahubali” will be, but there is already more than enough reason to catch this movie in a theater as soon as possible!
