How To Make Your Urban Streetwear Versatile
When someone mentions streetwear clothing, the word "casual" always comes to mind. If you grew up in the 90s, white chino shirts under a plaid shirt paired with very baggy acid wash denim will probably define streetwear. That, or hip hop jerseys with a lot of bling. The urban streetwear scene these days are slightly different. It’s safe to say that while it still embodies the casual, relaxed lifestyle, it’s slightly sleeker, and always clean.
Trainers
Any streetwear clothing wardrobe won’t be complete without a pair of white, pristine trainers or sneakers. The most popular brand right now is the Nike Air. You can go for less known brands, but the style should be similar if you are aiming for the look. The Adidas Superstar line is also good for urban streetwear. White foot covers can be worn with these shoes if you are worried about sweating too much in your shoes. Usually, though, they are worn without socks.
Denim Pants
You do not truly have an urban streetwear wardrobe unless you have a proper pair of dark, raw jeans. Make that several pairs because you will have to clean your pair of jeans ...
... unless you want dogs to run after you. To maintain the dark wash of your jeans, you can wash it with vinegar. This gets rid of the odor, according to Levi’s, without compromising its brand new look. When it comes to cut, baggy, but not overly baggy (not 90s baggy) is a classic. If you want something more trendy (but probably short-lived), you can try the drop crotch.
Sweats
If you are going for ultra-casual streetwear clothing, you should have a pair of joggers at your disposal. This is a good pair to wear in between denim (when you’re waiting for them to dry). If you are unsure about what to pair joggers with, just go for monochromatic choices. White tees with big logos go well with a gray pair of joggers. Match these with a dark hoodie and you should be well on your way to smart urban streetwear.Just make sure that your sweats don’t look too old and grubby. Remember, this season’s street fashion still has a fresh out-of-the-box feel to it. Don’t make people suspect you’re wearing your oldest gym clothes.
Shirts
When it comes to fabric, the best shirts are made of cotton. Pick ones that are loose-fitting enough to be comfortable but not too baggy that they sag off your shoulder. The key is to highlight your broad shoulders without having the shirt cling to your skin too much. You’re not looking for a baby tee here. If you’re wearing a known brand, choose a shirt with a big logo in the middle. Supremo is a fast favorite, especially for those who are looking for premium streetwear clothing that’s not too common. This brand had not gone into mass production yet, but they are known for some quality pieces.
Army Jackets
Come winter time, your urban streetwear wardrobe would benefit from a collection of army jackets. Be minimalist with your design choices. From experience, too much frills make streetwear pieces tacky after a few months. Go for something you can easily pair with the shirts you already have.
Hoodies
If we have retained anything from the 1990s and early 2000 streetwear, it’s the hoodies. It takes a bit of guts to pull the look off, though. Some claim that you outgrow your hoodies by the time you’re 30. If you look young enough and you have pieces simple enough to rock the look, however, by all means. These classics are comfortable, handy, and angsty. A gray hoodie on a chilly day can give your streetwear the added oomph.
Headgear
Beanies seem to be the trend these days when it comes to headgear. Some can pull off the cap, but if you are trying to achieve the smart urban streetwear look, a sporty cap might be too sloppy. When sporting an overly detailed beanie, make sure the rest of your outfit is minimalist. You should choose only one item of clothing as the central piece. The rest have to match up.
On Mixing and Matching
Streetwear is attractive because it gives off the air of effortless class. The 90s street look was a bit sloppy. Streetwear these days are a bit more mature and clean cut. This also makes the clothing genre a bit hard to understand from an outsider’s point of view. Perhaps there is no hard rule, except this one: don’t overdo it. Pick one item (it can be your shirt, your beanie, or your jacket) and make the rest of the elements look good with it. If you are wearing anything with a big logo on it, make sure it is the only piece of clothing you have that has that logo print. If you are unsure, wear only one brand at a time. This way, you know that the look will more or less come together in the end. Choose pieces of clothing that flatter your build. Don’t let broad shoulders go to waste, and don’t wear fit shirts either if you are trying to hide that paunch.
Building your wardrobe
Purchasing urban streetwear clothes can be quite pricey especially if you like to shop for premium brands. The good news is that most of these pricey streetwear clothing can last for a long time. The key is to choose pieces that are most likely to be wearable even if the trend has come and gone. Stay away from pieces that have too much detail unless you notice a certain "classic" touch to it. Best of all, dress as yourself. Your wardrobe should say something about you. Don’t mind the fashion rules so much. If you’re wearing something that makes you feel like you are in your own skin and not just trying to look cool, then you have found staple streetwear pieces.
