Auckland Wisdom Tooth Removal - Making A Wise Choice
The above picture is a type of x-ray image that dentists use to check the position of wisdom teeth or as they call them, third molars.
Let's look at the lower left corner area. See the very left most tooth-looking object? See how it is below and against the tooth to the right of it? That tooth is what is called an impacted wisdom tooth. Impacted simply means a tooth that doesn’t come in (erupt) into its correct position in the mouth like the rest of the teeth. It gets "stuck" behind a tooth or under bone.
Impacted wisdom teeth can cause many problems that are indications for their removal. In this article, we'll describe what those problems are and what Auckland wisdom tooth removal services may mean to you in time, money and your patient experience.
The Problems
Gum tissue: Pericoronitis is a fancy dental term meaning "around the crown infection". Wisdom teeth that have erupted partly into the mouth but still are "stuck" and never will come in totally, have loose gum tissue around them. Food particles and bacteria commonly become trapped under the gum tissue there ...
... and cause infections. These infections cause swelling and pain and in many cases become chronic long lasting) or acute (quick) episodes may require emergency services.
Damage: Impacted wisdom teeth commonly push against the root area of the erupted second molar tooth next to it as shown in our x-ray picture above. This pushing can cause a process called "resorption" in which the root of the erupted second molar tooth is "worn away". This process may cause enough damage so that the second molar needs to be extracted.
Pathology: Impacted wisdom teeth are associated with the formation of cysts and other rarer pathologies.
Decay: Because of their position so far back in the mouth for tooth brushing with their biting surface still partly under the gums, wisdom teeth more often than not become decayed, sometimes severely before the decay is discovered.
Crowding of other teeth: The idea that wisdom teeth should be extracted because they exert enough force to crowd the rest of the teeth is still debated among dental experts.
Other Reasons For Wisdom Teeth Removal
Orthodontic treatment (braces)
Radiation treatment of the jaws
Reconstruction of the jawbone
Broken jaw in the wisdom tooth area (may be eligible for ACC)
The Experience You Can Expect At The Best Dentists
Everyone is unique, but we can talk about common dental patient wisdom removal experiences.
A single wisdom tooth extraction takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
If you are having all your wisdom teeth removed, many patients will have either the left or right upper and lower wisdom teeth removed so they can eat on one side, and speak easier. Some people elect to have all four removed at one time.
Anesthesia types for the extraction procedure depend on discussion between patient and dentist. You will receive local anesthetic and/or sedation or in some rare cases, general anesthesia.
In most cases the dentist will make a small incision (cut) to remove the wisdom tooth and then close the gum tissue back together with stitches (sutures).
The dentist will prescribe an appropriate pain medication and in some cases an antibiotic may be prescribed before and after extraction(s).
Healing takes about two days to a week or more depending on the complexity of the extraction(s). Your dentist will give you specific instructions on immediate home care.
Cost
The cost of Auckland wisdom tooth removal varies depending on the complexity of the necessary surgery and other miscellaneous costs in the case of general anesthesia. Ask your dentist for an estimate.
