This latest technology, which offers a continuous stream of information, is awesome for various reasons. From the consumer’s perception, it entails saving time as one doesn’t have to download a file first, and then open it.

Moreover, people don’t have to manage huge amounts of space and data on the hard drive of their computer or extra disks anymore, as there is no data to download and save thereby. From the content producer’s perception, streaming box also provides great opportunities: with webcasts of live events and internet videos, there is no file to download; hence it is hard for most users to save content and deploy it illegally.

This includes Apple, which offers QuickTime and also the HTML5 based technology to reach iOS devices; Microsoft with Windows, Adobe with Flash, Silverlight and Media. In the initial days of streaming, the most relevant playback platforms were Macintosh and Windows computers.

Streaming box products also affect streaming technology adoption. For instance, although Microsoft introduced Silverlight in 2007, it wasn’t supported by any OVP until 2010, stunting its adoption. In this respect, OVPs such as Kaltura and Brightcove, and UGC sites like Vimeo and YouTube were among the first to support the HTML5 and iPad, accelerating their adoption.

While there are dozens of providers in both markets, the main OVPs include ClickstreamTV, Powerstream, Sorenson Media, Ooyala, Kaltura and Brightcove, while the most UGC sites are metaCafe, Viddler, DailyMotion, Vimeo, and YouTube.

As a technology industry and part of the entertainment sector, streaming content is an evolving battle field teeming with stakes and opportunities, in which companies prove their dominance and grow their market share.
