Many women who have had breast augmentation often get scared when they get pregnant. They often ask their plastic surgeons and gynaecologists if their breast implants will affect their pregnancy and their breast milk. More often than not, difficulties at birth and breastfeeding will arise whether or not you have a breast implant. If you have breast implants and are currently pregnant, here are three major things you should know to put your mind at ease:

1) Your breast milk is still safe.

According to research, there is no significant difference between the silicon levels in the milk of women with breast implants versus the milk produced by women without implants. Note, however, that you may encounter difficulty in producing breast milk. The milk ducts may have been damaged in the process of inserting silicone or saline implants, resulting in less milk produced. Another reason for the inadequate production of breast milk may be because a damaged nerve. During the surgery, the nerve that signals hormone production in the brain—which is triggered by a baby feeding on the nipple—may have been severed, which means ...
... the brain is not processing the need to lactate.

2) Breast implants do not cause birth defects.

In two human studies, researchers have found no significant increase in risk of birth defects in babies from mothers who have breast implants. Birth defects may arise from vices such as chain smoking, drinking and drug use during pregnancy. Also, it could come from genetic disorders passed on from previous generations. As long as you stay healthy and safe during pregnancy, with or without breast implants, your baby will most likely be fine.

3) You cannot undergo breast augmentation surgery while you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant, there is an increased risk of complications during surgery. Breast enhancement surgery is a major procedure that will take weeks of post-operative care and months before full recovery. The stress of surgery and post-op will not only take a toll on your body but also on the baby’s delicate body. The baby cannot be put under much stress during pregnancy, or you risk pre-mature delivery which can be dangerous for the infant.
