Explaining Different Oil Cooling Methods To Avoid Loss In Transformers
No equipment is ever made with zero loss or whose output is equal to the input. All the electrical appliances have certain losses that affect the productivity and application of the device while burning a hole in your pocket. Such losses can be prevented wisely if you follow some preventive measures religiously. Transformer is the widely used for its advantages and applications throughout various industries. It is the most efficient electrical machine that has no moving parts. The difference between the input and output power is the main cause of loss in the transformers.
The losses such as Core Loss, Copper Loss, Stray Loss, and Dielectric Loss affect the efficiency of the device and it is utterly important to fight it back so that you can save yourself from long electricity bills and hampered productivity. There are many ways to help you cool down the transformer and reduce the loss in the process. Cooling the device down allows you to enhance the productivity back and gives smooth performance without causing any harm.
In the different ways of cooling down the device, the medium coolants are circulated inside ...
... the device that transfer the heat from the windings and the cores entirely to the tank walls and then it finally dissipated to the surroundings. This can be done through three mediums:-
Air
Water
Oil
The conjugation of oil and the air is most popular among all three methods to enhance the productivity of the device. The oil cooling can be classified further into four methods
Oil Natural Air Natural (ONAN)
Oil Natural Air Forced (ONAF)
Oil Forced Air Natural (OFAN)
Oil Natural Air Forced (ONAF) - In this method the heated oil transfers the surrounding heat to the tank wall when it is made hollow and the air is blown through the device. This method is highly effective which enhance the efficiency of the device by five to six times than the natural medium of oil and the air.
Oil Natural Air Natural (ONAN) - In this case, the oil and the air are both natural mediums. The generated heat in the core and the windings of the device is passed to the transformer oil by the way of conduction. The oil soaks up the heat from inside and the surrounding air takes up the heat from the transformer tank.
Oil Forced Air Natural (OFAN) - The copper cooling coils are mounted above the core of the transformer. These coils are immersed in the oil completely, which helps the cores to pass the heat to the cooper coils while circulating the water inside. The major risk of using the method is leakage of water, which might contaminate the transformer oil.
