Memphis is a musical show that made its Broadway debut on October 19, 2009. Based on the exciting yet dangerous times of 1950, it is a story about music and love that transcends boundaries and races. It is a story of a white DJ down south who is a radical and takes life in the lighter vein. He is a quirky, unorthodox chap whose tastes go beyond the color of the skin. Being a DJ himself, he is fond of underground black music and tries to introduce it to white folks.

There is imminent and immediate resistance that just does not go away. To make matters even more complicated, he falls in love with a struggling black singer. The lead character, Huey Calloun, is played by Chad Kimball. Huey is the white DJ and TV host who's interested in black music. His love interest, Felicia, is played by Montigo Glover. Felicia is a small time black crossover singer who keeps moving from club to club. Love blossoms between Huey and Felicia amid a common interest in blues and hip-hop. Huey is all delighted with this development in his life. He wants to share his love of music with everyone. But he gets cold reception from others. He promises Felicia to put her career on fast track. All this leads to complicated, dark and scary situations, sometimes when he faces the ire of his own race of people.

Huey has a conservative and narrow minded mother who disapproves of his relationship with Felicia. The role of mother is played by Cass Morgan. There are other interesting characters too in Memphis. Felicia has a brother who cannot stop throwing suspicious glares at everyone who looks at his sister. J. Bernard Calloway plays the role of the brother. There is a stocky janitor, played by James Monroe Iglehart. And Michael McGrath plays role of a radio station owner.

The show made its world wide premiere in 2003-2004 at Massachusetts and California. Now it has come to Broadway. The show is already making waves on Broadway circuit. The inclusion of David Bryan has been big boost to the musical. His reputation reflects well on the show.
