Do you know why antioxidants are crucial for one's health? They play a role in fighting off certain diseases and illnesses, including it's believed some forms of cancer as well as premature aging and even heart disease!

It is common to believe that antioxidants are presented in a pill or even powder form. It cost supplement companies millions to campaign these products as well as the pill shape of vitamins A, C, and E. Sure these pills can help you to reach your goal but it is better to do it the natural way by eating right and exercising.

Do you want to know exactly how do antioxidants protect your body? The antioxidants mix with such elements, known as free radicals, and then neutralize them. Within the several functions and processes made by the body naturally produce these free radicals. The body can commonly take out these elements the way it usually protects itself from harmful elements.

There are elements however that impair the body's power to perform this, including living in a heavily polluted environment, having a weakened or impaired immune system, being exposed to dangerous UV rays, and ...
... taking in too much alcohol.

Too many free radicals in the body can actually cause damage to some of its own organs and even some of the systems as well. Some believe that free radicals are perpetrators in diseases such as heart disease and even forms of cancer. These elements also somehow gets the body to age faster than normal!

There are some 4,000 antioxidants in the foods that we eat. However, only a small number of these elements have been identified and even fewer have been synthesized into supplement form, so you see why you can't really use them in the place of a healthy diet! Foods that contain many antioxidants like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and items like these contain many vitamins as well as minerals, amino acids, and other elements that are necessary for good health, including those antioxidants that are necessary as well!

Vitamins too are considered antioxidants. Vitamin C is one of the main antioxidants, also known as ascorbic acid. This vitamin is found in all the tissues of the body but it is not stored in the body itself. This means that your daily diet needs to contain enough vitamin C for that day!

If you need to increase your vitamin C consumption, consider citrus fruits. These would include oranges of course but also grapefruits, kiwi fruit, and others. Vitamin C is also found in peppers, potatoes, cabbage, strawberries, and dark green leafy vegetables as well.

To sustain the body at its youthful age you may want to consider vitamin E. It might not completely stop your body from aging but it sure will protect the body from any form of skin damage.

If you want to increase your vitamin E consumption, you can consider fish oil, vegetable oil, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds of all types, wheat germ, and whole grain bread.

Another good antioxidant is beta carotene. Beta carotene is significant to the functions and processes of the body. This antioxidant will not let harmful UV rays from the sun affect or even damage the outer layer of a fruit. This is believed to also work for human skin! Beta carotene can also prevent pollution in the near by environment.

Beta carotene can be obtained from orange and yellow fruits and veggies. This would mean carrots of course, but also cantaloupe, peaches, sweet potatoes, squash, and so on. Collard greens, broccoli, and other several dark green leafy veggies are a great source of beta carotene.

And another important antioxidant to consider is selenium. It's believed that it prevents and reverses cell damage in many cases. Some also believe it may be used in the fight against certain cancers!

You can find selenium in supplements but taking too much of it can actually be toxic. This is why you should consider getting it from your diet. Food items with selenium include fish, red meat, eggs, poultry, garlic and whole grains. Fruits and veggies may also be grown in selenium rich soil.
