The NY District US Army Corps of Engineers has begun its study to determine if large movable storm gates would lessen the damage on the South Shore communities in the event of a hurricane. An article about the study in the Long Island Herald, says the study could take up to 3 years and cost $3 million dollars to complete.

The storm gates would be installed at the East Rockaway inlet and the Jones Inlet. The objective of the barriers is to restrict the amount of water flowing into the Reynolds Channel and Jones Bay during a storm. The study also includes strengthening the Long Beach Barrier Island between the two inlets and another nine miles of coast line from the Jones inlet up to the border of Massapequa and Amityville.
The barriers would be a pair of swinging doors that would close when the water rises, and open again as the level decreases. Freeport NY Mayor Robert Kennedy sited the hurricane barriers installed in Stamford Harbor, CT in 1964, and two others in New Bedford. CT and Fairhaven Harbor, MA. as examples for the need to complete this new study. Mr. Kennedy told the Nassau County Village Officials ...
... Association at their meeting on February 16th, that these examples have been 100 percent effective.

There is no way to predict when the next major hurricane will hit, meanwhile new construction keeps going along the coastline in Queens, Nassau County, and Suffolk County. Every developers nightmare is to have a new complex destroyed before it even gets completed. Take, for example, the Greybarn apartment community along Route 110 in Amityville. They have 1 residential building complete, along with another building for retail space. The project is supposed to have 5 buildings by the time it is complete in 2019. The complete project will have 500 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom apartments for rent in Amityville, NY.
