No Matter Which Playstation Hardware You Own – Horizon Is A Stunning Technical Masterpiece
When the first PlayStation 4 Pro leak occurs, many people worry about what the new hardware means for the entire platform. Will the developer align the target with a system? Will old hardware lag behind? Horizon Zero Dawn is a very important title - developer Guerrilla Games is known for its outstanding technological innovation and achievements. While the team is expected to present a title to show off the power of the PS4 Pro, it also shows that there are many lifetimes in the base hardware. Based on a week with the game, the developer delivered both counts. The Horizon is a stunning technical showcase no matter which it's your PlayStation hardware.
After reviewing the PlayStation conference PS4 Pro show in September, we promised a system that will provide improved graphics, high performance and 4K presentation. At that time, we see the demo is definitely in the latter, at least. Horizon's checkerboard 4K is simply amazing - maybe touching softer than native, but still beautiful. In addition to Sony Bend's "Days Gone", it is a display of Pro 4K features. However, the presentation ...
... is clearly early - the on-going work performance analysis shows that the frequent frame rate drops at the target 30fps.
The vast majority of the game is locked; the final frame running with a neat frame-tempo 30fps sees that the vast majority of these problems are resolved. Although the scalability of the Decima motor between the PS4 and PS4 Pro proved to be growing, both versions show very small samples of falling frames (almost visible and masked by motion blur when viewed), and these very small falls are mainly reflected on both PS4 Pro Provided a very small improvement. Wide particle studies and alpha effects are seen to cause drops - as infrequently as possible.
In addition, performance consistency is crucial when crossing the open world. Producing a sandbox game at this scale is not trivial - many similar titles struggle to maintain excellent performance during the transition, as the CPU continues to process the game's logic and prepare instructions along the way, . For this reason, titles such as Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3 may become stuck and stuck when the player does nothing but move from A to B. Critically, Horizon Zero Dawn is not affected by this issue - it's a super smooth experience, regardless of the PlayStation hardware you're using, in your open world.
The excellent performance of Horizon in 4K, the base 1080p of the base PS4 version is a big success. Pro equipment has 2.3x GPU power of the standard model, the memory bandwidth is not scaled in stages - and we see the PS4 engine scale between 1080p in the basic hardware and 4K in the Pro. . The success of the guerrilla without affecting performance was impressive, but the team pushed the envelope here, adding more visual enhancement than the basic version of the game.
Whilst the Horizon speaks only of its own resolution, what we enjoy about the presentation of the head is that Guerrilla acknowledges that it is not a significant single pixel count - it is more necessary to make a larger 4K presentation. With that in mind, we were delighted to see the resolution improvements on some tissues. Praise is also worthy of a noticeable increase in the quality of the texture filtering. Lower levels of anisotropic filtering in the base hardware can be featured on a 1080p image - but the effect is much more pronounced at 4K. Fortunately, it's not a problem with the horizon.
We are still working on the main Horizon Zero Dawn coverage (but expect further in the coming weeks), but we need to work harder so that even this performance analysis article can be fully and eventually evaluated. Last week, Sony announced that Pro users of the 'day zero' patch, which is not ready for the press yet, would allow the gamer to choose between the checkerboard 4K mode or another performance-focused option.
This new mode directs the power of the Pro to a higher frame rate - exactly what we saw in the incredible rise of the Tomb Raider PS4 Pro update. Sony notes do not have a 60 fps promise - only the softer frame rates are mentioned - so we'll report on what the performance mode provides as soon as we can. However, we can confirm that the patch is available when the game is started.
The ability to choose between resolution and higher performance can be icing on the cake, which is already a technologically superior title. However, even without the new mode, brilliant art design, excellent performance and a superb 4K presentation combination make up the most impressive PlayStation 4 Pro title we've ever seen. But at the same time it is clear that the basic equipment is not behind - Horizon is an impressive success for the standard PS4 at the same time.
