Most funeral directors are practising embalmers; they prepare and preserve the body before internment. The general duties of funeral directors include congregation with family members, helping families to plan the different services, they also helps in embalming, preparing bodies, planning and organising wakes and memorial services, placing obituary notices in newspapers and handling paperwork.

In the Sikh funeral, Sikhism death is not considered a natural process, and only it happens as a direct result of God's Will. To a Sikh, birth and death are closely associated, because they are both part of the cycle of human life of "coming and going" which is seen as the transient stage towards Liberation, complete unity with God; Sikhs believe in reincarnation.
The public display of grief by wailing or crying out loud at the Sikh funeral is dejected and should be kept to a bare minimum. Cremation is the ideal method for the disposal, although if this is not possible other methods such as burial, or burial at sea, are acceptable.
On the day of the cremation in Sikh funeral, the body is washed and dressed and then taken to the Gurdwara or home where hymns from Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Sikh Scriptures are recited by the congregation. Reciting, chants, God’s name is also performed by Ragis while the relatives of the deceased recite "Wahe guru" sitting near the coffin. This service normally takes from 30 to 60 minutes. In the end, an Ardas is chanted before the coffin is taken to the cremation place. The ashes are later composed and body is disposed in the Punjab river by immersing it.
In the Buddhist funeral marks the transition from one life to the next for the deceased. It also reminds the living of their own mortality.
In Judaism, funerals follow fairly specific rites, though they are subject to variation in custom. Funerals in Judaism share many features with those of Islam. Jewish religious laws such as halakha call for burial of the body proceeded by a basic ritual involving bathing and shrouding the body, accompanied by prayers and readings from the Torah.
Tamil funeral known as Antyesti, literally "last rites or last sacrifice” refers to the rite-of-passage rituals associated with a funeral in Hinduism. It is also referred as Antya-kriya, or Vahni Sanskara, Antima Samskaram,  or Anvarohanyya, meaning the same.
In the Tamil funeral, the cremation ground is called Shmashana (in Sanskrit), and traditionally it is located near a river. The ornaments, if any, are removed and the chief mourner who is generally the eldest son walks around the pyre three times keeping the body to his left. While walking the son sprinkles the water and sometimes ghee on top of the pyre from a container. He then sets the pyre ablaze. The beginning of the cremation heralds the start of the traditional mourning period, which usually ends on the morning of the 13th day after death.
