Plastics are also called as synthetic resins. Synthetic resins are of two types: thermosetting resins and thermoplastic resins. Thermosetting resins (ex: phenolic resin, melamine resin) are hardened by using heat, and they will never become soft again. Thermoplastic resins can be re-softened by heat (ex: polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, and polypropylene).
PVC is an acronym for polyvinyl chloride. It is the third most widely produced polymer after polyethylene and polypropylene. PVC is available in two basic forms: rigid and flexible. Pure PVC is a white, brittle solid. PVC is not soluble in alcohol but slightly soluble in tetrahydrofuran.
Usually, thermoplastics are supplied in the form of palletized material. The palletized material is already blended with additives. It is often supplied in powder form. The material is resistant to oxidation and degradation so it can be stored for long term. PVC is made of 57% chlorine (derived from industrial grade salt) and 43% carbon (derived predominantly from oil / gas via ethylene). Polymers like polyethylene, polypropylene are totally dependent on oil or gas. In contrast ...
... to this PVC is less dependent on crude oil or gas which makes it a natural resource saving plastic. The chlorine in PVC gives excellent fire resistance.
Uses:
1. Pipes: Municipal and industrial applications use half of the world’s polyvinyl chloride resin manufactured annually to produce pipes roughly.

2. Electric cables: PVC is very commonly used to give an insulation to electric cables. PVC used for this purpose is plasticized.

3. Unplasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (uPVC) for construction: uPVC is also known as rigid PVC. It is a low-maintenance material and extensively used in the building industry.

4. Signs: Polyvinyl chloride is formed in flat sheets in a variety of thicknesses and colours.

5. Clothing and Furniture: PVC is widely used in clothing. It is either used to create a leather-like material or at times simply for the effect of PVC.

6. Healthcare: The two main applications of single-use medically approved PVC compounds are flexible containers and tubes. Containers are used for collecting blood, blood components, and urine samples or for ostomy products. Tubes are used for blood taking and blood giving set, catheters, heart-lung bypass sets, haemodialysis sets, etc.

7. Plasticisers: The PVC-DEHP combination is proving to be very suitable for making blood bags because DEHP stabilises red blood cells, minimising haemolysis (red blood cell rupture).

8. Flooring: Flexible PVC flooring is inexpensive. It is used in a variety of buildings covering the home, hospitals, offices, schools, etc.
Purchasing PVC: There are many online companies that purchase PVC. They are available at a reasonable price when purchased in bulk. These online companies offer great deals on a variety of products from time to time.
