You are all ready, to begin with your DIY project for wood finishing! This article is to help you to select the wood finish for your desired results. Following are the tips to guide you regarding this
• Make a decision on such issues as how the Wood finishing products are going to be used? Whether or not it will be exposed to water, dampness or other such elements? What kind of wood finish you want transparent, semi-transparent, or opaque?
• According to your requirements, buy the suitable finish. For this, you should know the fundamentals of wood finishes. Clear finishes give translucent looks and contain varnish, polyurethane, and lacquer, water-based. Opaque finishes paints, which comes in a variety of colors.
• Go through the information provided on the product label for further help in choosing the right finish. Have a look at the finished sample product available at retail stores to get a hang of what the final finish will look like.
• In case of exterior wood surfaces like siding or fascia boards, only use paint that is labelled for exterior use only and if possible contains a fungicide ...
... to safe guard it from fungus.
• If you are planning to change the color of raw wood, try a wood stain. Wood stains will make cheaper wood look expensive, for example - pine, look more expensive like cherry, oak, or mahogany
• If you require a weatherproof finish such as for outdoor fittings or wooden furniture, use wood stains which consist of sealers.
• Always try to give thick finishes to the furniture which will be used in high-moisture or high-traffic areas. Examples of such furnishings include furniture used in your garden or living room. To get a thicker finish, try using wood varnish, polyurethane, lacquer finish, water-based finishes, or paint finishing. These can be used in several coats i.e. layers on the wooden surface. Oil finishers cannot build up coats and results in wood surface more natural looking.
• To pinpoint or to make visible the grain in wood, use oil finishers. They work more effectively on hardwoods for example red oak, maple, cherry, and walnut.
• You can only use linseed oil finish on interiors and for restoring wooden furniture with an existing linseed finishing. You will find both kinds of linseed oil- regular and boiled. Use boiled linseed oil if you want to dry surface up quickly.
• If you are looking to finish a wooden craft that has not been finished already, one can use either Danish or Teak oils. Danish oil has low shine than teak oil.
• For non-toxic Wood finishing products, like for wooden toys, use mineral oil.
• For products that are more exposed to moisture, use Tung oil finishing.
• For a little glossy or flat appearance, you can use wax finish.
Whatever finishing you decide on, always remember wooden finishes protect your wooden furniture apart from making them look classy. So, give a finishing that is suitable to the wooden surface and makes them last with you for a lifetime.
