Nursing job and clinical practice require certain communication skills when it comes to dealing with the patients. During the evaluation of a patient’s condition, the inputs given by the patient often get influenced by the way they are being questioned or inquired by the nurse or the doctor. The data collected in relation to certain information may vary as per the patient’s emotional and psychological connection with the nurse. A proper balance has to be maintained in this regard.

Since most of the patients are usually in a sad or even depressed state of mind; for this reason, you need to be careful about what you speak. Careful use of words is necessary. You should not utter anything that could possibly hurt their sentiments.




Speak positively- Apart from medicines, the hope and desire to get rid of illness also play a vital role. They work as a placebo. So, when you communicate with your patients, make sure to maintain a positive tone in your voice. Your positive tone will instil confidence in your patients, rather than making them feel more depressed and disheartened.




Be a good listener- When it comes to learning effective communication skills with patients then the whole process includes becoming a good listener. This is more important in the case of children and disabled persons. You should listen to your patients carefully, rather than showing any signs of running out of patience.




Reflect- When a patient shares his or her views, emotions, and thoughts with a nurse then it is quite natural that the patient expects some input in return. As a nurse, you need to repeat the same content but in your own words. This will help create a good bonding between the patient and the nurse.

Apart from these, there are several other tips that one can follow in order to improve one’s communication skills with patients. Most of the courses on nursing include a module that focuses on honing the communication skills. But, as a professional you will also need to work on your shortcomings in order to turn yourself in a better caregiver or nurse. Making a patient feel happy will certainly provide you better job satisfaction.
