This Valentine's day, you may be looking for ways to keep the romance, without breaking the bank. We've all been a little more frugal over the past year, but that doesn't mean we have to cut corners on romance. On the contrary, studies have shown that in economic downturns, not only do we do more entertaining with friends and families in our homes, but we tend to get a little more creative in how we do this entertaining too. As the most romantic day of the year approaches, here are some simple ways to make the day all that more special - not through your budget, but rather through your ideas and efforts.

For most people, Valentine's Day consists of some combination of dinner and/or a gift. So let's touch on the gift first. For that very special woman in your life, yes it's true, diamonds are a girl's best friend, as is anything we can wear. But, you would be surprised how far a little thought, effort ...
... and sentimentality can go. Go sifting through that box of old pictures that you have stashed away to "one day" put into an album and create a special memento of the two of you. Try a theme such as "the greatest vacations" or "just the two of us" or "through the years." For the man in your life, why not create an experience for him such as "Sunday Football Extravaganza" catered by you for him and his friends? Or perhaps a book of coupons towards things he would love for you to do for him.

Then there is dinner. Well, of course the most cost effective solution (and usually the most romantic) is to create the perfect romantic setting at home. To do this, look no further than your tablecloths, napkins, table runners and napkin rings to make your dinner table the best spot in town. The formula is simple. Think red, white and black. If you already have a tablecloth that is in one of these colours, start there. If not, use your dishes as a starting point. Plain white dishes should only be used with a red or black tablecloth, while patterned dishes may work best with a white tablecloth.

Next, layer in some napkins in one of the complimentary colours (If your tablecloth is black or white, make sure those napkins are red.) Whatever you do, don't leave those napkins bare! Add in some fabulous beaded napkin rings in red, black or clear. Silver napkin rings works well too. Add a red table runner across the table for that extra punch of Valentine's Day red. For the final touch, create some romantic lighting with red, black or white candles, depending on how you have coordinated your table linens. Et Voila! A table fit for the most romantic at heart.
