Medicare Supplement Plans also known as the Medigap plans are supplementary insurance plans to make up the bills left aside by the Original Medicare. The name ‘Medigap' derived from the function of these plans of bridging the gap between the Original Medicare policy coverage and the actual medical bill payable. Therefore, from the term itself we understand the function of these plans. These plans as stated earlier help the beneficiary to pay for those bills which remains uncovered by the Original Medicare.

The Medigap plans are sold and administered by the private insurance companies only. There are twelve standardized Medicare Supplement Plans to be sold by the private insurance companies. And these twelve plans are categorized under the letter cover A through L. There is an important thing that should be remembered in this respect. Each of these plans under the same letter cover must have same benefits irrespective of the company selling them. Therefore it is a guarantee that if you want to purchase a Medicare supplement plan from any company then you shall get all the benefits of that plan as been provided by ...
... other companies. There is no discrimination on the basis of the plan you are choosing or the company you purchasing from. But besides this the thing that should be kept in mind is that the premium charges may vary with the company you choose.

The enrollment policy of the Medicare supplement plans is that one must be under the Original Medicare part A and B plans. This is the most primary criterion of having a Medicare Supplement Plan. If a person is not having the Original Medicare plan he can never get the benefits of the Medicare Supplement Plans. Even if a person is having Medicare Supplement Plans and he switches over to any other plan other than the Original Medicare then he cannot get the benefits of the Medicare Supplement Plans unless he switches back to the original Medicare. Moreover, the Medigap plans cannot even work with the Medicare Advantage plans. Therefore, it can be easily understood that the Medicare Supplement Plans are only supplementary to the Original Medicare and there is no chance that it can be used with any other plan.

To choose the right Medigap plan the best thing you can do is to contact an insurance agent so that he can give you the right advice of which plan you should choose. Though it is true that you can choose your Medigap by yourself, but it is always better to consult with your insurance agent before you invest on the Medicare Supplement Plans. Choosing the perfect match Medicare Supplement Plan is not that much easy. There are several plans which apparently seem to be less profitable but the fact is that on the other hand these plans gives a better return in the form of deductibles. These plans help a lot with the deductibles they offer saves a lot of money. Therefore, before you decide to purchase a Medicare Supplement Plan it is essential that you read the offer documents very carefully so that you can get the best return out of your Medicare Supplement Plans.
