Any kind of car reviews tends to make remarks on the suspensions, brakes, clutches, shock absorbers and so on. Problematically people do have this tendency not to go into depth and do a half research. This can cause severe problems. This is why one needs to opt for extensive research. This is particularly applicable in the case of cars, produced by the West, along with the leaf spring suspensions. Leaf Springs refer to the used suspension in the vehicles. Interestingly, it dates back to the medieval time period. Here is some basic information about this kind of spring, which can be of use.

What Are These Leaf Springs?

Leaf Springs, as mentioned earlier, go back to the Romans from the medieval period. This was the invention due to the fact that the Romans needed to protect their chariots from the rough surfaces. It did not undergo many changes until the 1900s, when the first shock absorber was discovered and so on. These are one of the basic forms of suspensions, constructed ...
... out of the steel layers of various sizes, placed upon one another. Most of the time, it takes an elliptical shape. Its characteristic elasticity enables the vehicle to maintain control over the moving cars.

What Are The Basic Advantages Of Leaf Springs?

As it’s mentioned already, leaf springs compile an enormous amount of steel. These extreme layers of steel, along with the metallic weight, provides a great amount of back up support between the axles, wheels and the chassis. This makes the structure a compact one and this is the reason behind the dependence of the large industries upon this product. Vertical loading also heavily depends upon these types of springs, for the sake of equal distribution of loads. As a result of the equal distribution, the vehicles can move more freely. Therefore, this is one of the top most reasons for putting up with this spring.

Another important issue is that of the damping. In case the suspension is less damped than what is required, the car can bounce around after hitting any kind of bumper or pot holes. During the earlier days, before the innovation of the shock absorber, everything was dependent upon the Helical Springs. This caused so many problems to the cars which were driven in quite a pace. On the contrary to this, the leaf springs prevented the friction in much greater extent. Altogether, leaf Rear Springs have made the vehicles much controllable than the early days.

Leaf Springs, in general, have a simpler design and the production cost is much less, if we compare that with the production cost of the springs and dampers during the earlier times. Therefore, it is quite affordable too. Amidst many, Mono leaf springs refer to the design which includes only one single set of leaf springs. This is also known as the Parabolic Leaf Springs. This kind of spring, however, can be used in the case of very lightweight vehicles as these springs lack the required amount of strength.

The Disadvantages of Leaf Springs:

There are many good things about Leaf springs, but they are not devoid of some problems. One of these problems is the fact this kind of springs is quite bad with suspension tuning. In case of racing cars and other performance cars need to have flexible suspension settings, which are appropriate for different kinds of driving styles. This has been much easier now days with the help of flexible coilovers. The association of the ends of the leaf springs with the chassis makes it difficult to have any scope for the adjustments. Therefore, the possibility of adjustment can be quite a problematic issue in this case.

Another problem is that the leaf springs allow little scopes of motions and restricted, vertical movements. The attachment between the leaf springs and the chassis does not allow many different types of directions or movements. Unlike this, there are many modern apparatus which has come into being. This modern equipment enables people to move much freely, in comparison to the earlier situation.

Apart from all these facts, leaf springs are stiffer than the helical springs and this is why comfort is at stake in the case of Leaf Springs.
