Commercial Duct Design
Creating a standard ductwork system can be a difficult task in itself, but when the application changes and is geared toward commercial buildings, the process becomes that much more complicated. A beginner may assume that magnifying the scope of the project so that it works on a larger scale is all that is required for commercial duct design. The truth is not quite that simple.
When planning out HVAC duct work with commercial implications, the first goal should be to design a system that utilizes the smallest duct size that is feasibly possible. Though small, this system cannot violate any pertinent size constraints. If the designer missteps and creates a duct that is too small, the risk is high that a noisy fan will have to be installed to compensate for the smaller space.
Creating the perfect HVAC ductwork route is also key in implementing an efficient system. The best design will use a route that allows for the shortest duct runs possible. This will accomplish two things for the designer. First, the shorter the run, the less materials and work needed for installation. Second, shorter runs lend themselves to ...
... a more balanced system. A balanced system can be achieved through computer programs, but starting off with a balanced system puts you ahead of the game.
If the system contains leaks and is not in balance, there is a great chance it will let conditioned air out while bringing in unconditioned air. Energy bills will rise as efficiency drops. Conditions will also be ripe for mold and humidity to accumulate. Leaks may also allow other hazardous contaminations to enter the airflow.
Improper design may lead to ducts that contain too many bends and are too small for the commercial building. This will stifle the airflow, lessening the conditioned air that reaches the rooms. It will also create a more noisy system. The energy required to move the air through the system will be greater, as well. Energy bills will reflect this greater need for energy.
Through proper duct planning, a builder can help to ensure that the HVAC system does not leak. This system should also evenly dispense air throughout the entire building. The goal is that all rooms should have a consistent and cohesive feel, lacking hot and cold spots.
If properly designed and implemented, a commercial ductwork system will both efficiently and silently maintain a consistent temperature throughout the building. A proper ductwork system will actually do more than just that. It will also be easier on the wallet than other lesser systems. Inadequately designed HVAC systems will essentially leak money, costing hundreds of dollars in extra energy costs.
Comfort level as the result of correct air flow is the main objective of duct design. The heating and cooling system should also operate efficiently while meeting all demands placed upon it. It should be properly sealed and its installation should meet all industry standards. A proper system will maintain a neutral pressure throughout the building.
