Glazing is an important part of building your house and it involves many types as well as many techniques. Each one has a different purpose. For a long period of time, many people, especially in the United States have been putting the single and double glazing techniques in use, in order to reduce the noise effects. Due to the advent of modern techniques and styles, these days, there is another technique to reduce the noise effects to the minimum. This is known as the technique of secondary glazing, which is very popular in the UK. It includes the installation of a supplementary or secondary glazing on the inner part of the double or single glazed window. This technique is much easier than the other existing techniques and less expensive. You can also do it on your own if you have a shoe string budget. In general, you can have a 10 years guarantee as well. When you invest into something like this, it is better to run a proper research and find out what is the best option available. For those who do not have much idea about the benefits of having secondary glazing, here are some tips which can be of great help.

Reduction ...
... of Unnecessary Noise

So many household areas in the UK suffer from immense noise pollution of different types. These types include noise pollution from traffics, trains, plains, neighborhood and so on. Secondary glazing is particularly useful for these kinds of areas where the amount of noise pollution is somewhat extra from the other ones.

Secondary glazing technique is the ultimate way to reduce the noise pollution to a greater extent. Studies show that a single glazed window along with standard secondary glazing can reduce the amount of noise by 70%-80%. If you can spare little extra, you can install laminate or the acoustic glass instead of 4mm float glass in order to increase the reduction process of sound pollution.

What is best about this technique is that this one excels the double glazing technique in the performance. The amount of sound pollution generally depends upon the gap between window panes and the glass. In general, double glazing technique is highly dependent on the sealed glass types which involve two pieces of glass with a gap of 24 mm or 28 mm. On the contrary, in case of the secondary glazing, the gap remains approximately 100 mm or more than that.

Another important factor in this case is the type of glass used in the window. In secondary glazing technique, standard 4 mm glass is used which provides sound pollution of more or less 40 decibels. In secondary glazing, there are different types of glass with different types of uses –

• 6 mm float glass, which provides around 43 decibels of sound reduction
• 6.4 mm laminated glass, which offers approximately 46 decibels of noise pollution
• 6.8 mm acoustic, laminated glass, which offers almost 50 decibels of sound pollution

The Issue of Increased Thermal Efficiency

Secondary glazing can improve the thermal efficiency of the windows magically. Even if you use the standard 4 mm glass, this technique can easily reduce the amount of heat lost through the windows by changing the U-value approximately from 4 W/M2K to 2 W/M2K or more. If you can spare some extra, you can also use high efficient low-e glass, for example Pilkington K for the better result where the U-value can be reduced to the level of 1.5 W/M2K.

For Convenience Sake

Since this technique does not refer to the replacement of window, you do not need to seek permission from the UK building rules and regulations. Therefore, you do not need to waste your precious time in the building plan approval procedure.

The timber windows eventually become very dirty, old and make rattling sound, especially during bad weather. Secondary glazing offers a much better barrier and provides a pleasant environment

Security Reasons

Secondary glazing provides an additional barrier which costs problem from the intruders. The tough and laminated glass is quite difficult to break also.

Environment Friendly

Secondary glazing technique, apart from reducing noise pollution, can reduce energy consumption too. Most importantly, these types of windows are repairable and replaceable.

If you are looking to install secondary glazing in your home or in your office, NRG Glass can offer you high quality glazing products and installation services, so that you get an excellent end result.
