1. Never rub fresh stains, or you’ll need to call in professional carpet cleaning Toronto to fix it!
If you’ve spilt something on your carpet, then do not rub it! The best way to tackle a fresh stain is with a plain, white, absorbent cloth. Work the stain by pressing the cloth down heavily on the stain. Once you’ve absorbed as much as possible with the area of the cloth you’ve used, rotate to a new, clean area of the cloth. Move around the stain until no more can be absorbed.
Once that’s done you can add a small amount of water and repeat the process again with another clean cloth.
2. For stubborn, fresh stains, add a spot cleaner
If you’ve completed step number 1 above and still have some staining, try a spot cleaner that you can purchase from your local store and follow the instructions. Beware as some of these can bleach your carpet. Always check an out of the way area first before tackling your stain.
3. Vacuum high traffic areas twice weekly
In doorways and halls, your carpets can get particularly dirty, especially if you have children or pets. Vacuum these high traffic areas ...
... twice per week to make sure that you remove the fresh dirt, otherwise you’ll need professional cleaning more often.
4. Vacuum other areas once a week
Other areas of your home can be left for a once a week vacuum, once every fortnight if you’re feeling lazy! Because they don’t get much dirt tracked in, the will be relatively clean.
5. Add doorway mats to reduce dirt
It might seem like an obvious thing to do, but many people do not have door mats or rugs in all their exterior doorways. You might even like to add one in the kitchen and bathroom too. Door mats can easily be cleaned outside and prevent most of the dirt from coming into your home that would otherwise be trekked in.
6. Use a quality comb attachment with your vacuum, especially if you have pets
Pet hair is notoriously hard to remove from carpet. To remove pet hair from your carpets you’ll need to have a powerful vacuum with a good quality brush attachment. It’s no use buying a vacuum on sale or grabbing someone’s hand me down, they simply won’t do the job that you require.
You’ll also need to make sure that you are grooming your pets often to reduce hair fall.
7. Vacuum before steam or dry cleaning
You’ll need to remove the surface dirt before doing a professional steam or dry cleaning. Make sure that you vacuum the area that you’re getting professionally cleaned thoroughly before the cleaners come in.
8. “Professional” machines that you can hire are never as good as they sound
Professional carpet cleaners pay a lot of money for the equipment that they use. The machines that they purchase are industrial strength, designed to give the best clean possible. The “professional” machines that you can hire for steam or dry cleaning around your home to DIY simply don’t have the same amount of power behind them. So while it might seem tempting to rent a machine to save a little bit of money, you’re just not going to get the same effect.
9. Always get a professional clean before vacating a rental property
Don’t risk losing part of your bond because your carpets aren’t clean at the end of the lease. Even if a professional clean doesn’t remove all of the stains, usually a property manager will be happy enough if you’re able to show them the receipts. Unless you’ve done a real number on your carpets with stains requiring carpet replacement, you should be able to get all of your bond back – for the carpets at least!
10. Steam clean twice a year
Steam cleaning is the best way to dislodge all the dirt and stains in your carpet. To keep your carpets in the best shape you should book in for a professional steam clean at least once per year if you are a two-person household, and twice for a bigger home with more occupants. This means you’ll have to keep off the carpet for a few hours to a few days after the clean so make sure that you book your time wisely.
