3 Tips For Getting Household Chores Done Quickly
Household chores are for some of us, just about the most unpleasant things we have to do on a regular basis. While we like to keep our house nice and clean, we don't necessarily like the things we need to do to keep it that way. Hiring a home maintenance or cleaning service is an option for those whose finances allow, but if not, the only other option is to do the work ourselves. With that in mind, this article offers three tips to help you get your home maintenance activities done more quickly and efficiently.
1. Think ahead before you act. This is especially true for routine jobs where we get so used to doing basic tasks over and over that it becomes more habit than thought. Just because it's" the way I've always done it" doesn't mean it's the best or most efficient way. Examine what you do and see if there is a better way to do it that will save you time and effort.
2. Estimate job time realistically. Have you ever done a job you thought would take about an hour, only to find it took you twice as long to get it done? It may not be because you are slow or inefficient, but because you under-estimated the ...
... time needed to do the task. Be sure to take into account the preparation and cleanup time -- i.e. getting the tools out, cleaning up, and putting them away -- as well as the actual working time. For example applying touch-up paint in a bedroom involves not only the painting part of the job, but getting out the brushes, drop cloths, paint, ladder, and other tools and then cleaning them up and putting them away when you're done. In some cases, the prep and clean-up tasks may take much longer than the actual work you do.
3. Do your biggest jobs a little bit at a time. Sometimes we don't even attempt a job because it seems overwhelming and so big we don't know where to start. As the old saying goes "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." In the same way we can get our biggest tasks done by taking "one bite at a time." For instance if you need to clean your house, try to do one room each day, and by the end of the week you'll have most - if not all of your house done.
Doing your household tasks doesn't need to be sheer drudgery. By thinking ahead before you act, realistically estimating job times, and doing your big jobs a little bit at a time, you can do your household tasks in a timely manner, and keep your home looking neat and clean all of the time.
