Importance of long term strength in concrete structures (slabs , columns ,beams , foundations)
Concrete structures made with slag cement and ground granulated blast furnace slag has higher compressive strength and better flexural strength, as compared to concrete made with pure Portland cement or Portland pozollona cement. This helps to achieve batter factor of safety for concrete structures and allows for optimisation of concrete mix design. Material properties are enhanced, and life cycle cost of a structure is also reduced with usage of slag cement.
Role of slag cement in improving concrete strength
Slag cement increases the compressive strength and flexural strength over prolonged period of time. The long term strength increases with increase of slag percentage, in concrete. When Portland cement reacts with water it forms Calcium silicate hydrate and Calcium hydroxide. Calcium silicate hydrate provides strength and holds concrete together. Calcium hydroxide is the by-product that does not contribute to strength and ultimately leeches out, leading to corrosion of reinforcement, carbonation etc. When ...
... slag cement is used as a part of cementitious material in a concrete mix, it reacts with water and calcium hydroxide to from additional calcium silicate hydrate gel. This calcium silicate hydrate gel densifies the concrete mix, improving the strength.
When slag cement is used in concrete mixes, initial strength development may be slower. But ultimate strength is more than concrete made with pure Portland cement or Portland pozollona cement.
If more strength is required at early stage , usage of admixtures will also improve initial concrete strength. However the 56 days , 90 days and strength beyond these periods ( 180 days, 365 days , etc ) will be far more compared to concrete made with pure Portland cement or Portland pozollona cement .
The factors that influence strength development are
Chemical composition of slag
Proportions of slag component
Chemical composition of cement component
Concrete temperature
Fineness of slag component
Availability of soluble alkali
Ambient temperature and humidity
Slag cement has also particularly important effect on flexural strength of concrete. Flexural strength is one of the principal factors of concrete pavement design. Improved flexural strength happens because of increased denseness of paste and improved paste aggregate bond.
