Geotextile membranes are commonly used for purposes ranging from weed suppression, drainage, refurbishment, and filtration and for ground stabilisation purposes. They may be used on driveways, pathways, training gallops and riding arenas and as aggregates and construction materials.

Functions of geotextile membranes

These may be woven or non-woven. These membranes perform the following types of functions:

Plastic woven bottom geotextile membranes, which are available at low costs can act as stabilizers for levelled grounds.
The strong plastic membranes can effectively separate the earth and clean drainage layer.
The non woven types can separate the drainage layer and riding arena surface.
The non woven membranes that have good drainage properties effectively prevent the surface from being washed in the stone.
The non slip membranes can prevent contamination of the surface with stone.
The sealed membrane layers can prevent creeping of the surface under the joins.

Different ...
... types of geotextile membranes

These may be of the following types:

Woven geotextile membranes

The woven geotextile membrane fabric is used on the ground surface. The fabric facilitates weed control. The heavy duty fabric can be used effectively for suppressing weeds for long periods of time. The fabric possesses good tear resistance and can also be used below the ground surface. It can act as a separating and stabilizing membrane below the surface of the ground.

This property of the woven geotextile membranes is commonly used for paths and gravel driveways. This fabric carries a 100gsm grade and is suitable for garden areas, which may experience heavy foot traffic. Rolls of woven membranes may be available in widths ranging from 1m to 5m.

Driveway geotextile membranes

The geotextile membranes meant for driveways are non woven. The fabric being permeable, allows easy passage of water. This property of non-woven membranes makes them suitable for separation, filtration and drainage purposes. They can effectively be used to separate soil and aggregate layers. Due to this property, the non woven types are widely used in ground works, soak away crates and for wrapping perforated pipes or land drains.

The driveway membranes also work well for ground stabilisation. Their design makes them suitable for use in under vehicle areas. They are available in rolls varying in widths ranging from 1m to 4.5m. These membranes usually carry a 90gsm grade.

Geotextile filter membranes

The geotextile filter membranes are non woven and possess excellent filtration and drainage properties. These membranes have an open structure, but are yet stable. Their unique structure makes them suitable for trench linings during the construction of land drains.

The non woven membranes can effectively separate soil and aggregate. This quality makes them ideal as filter membranes. They are useful in preventing soil and aggregate mixing. Their capacity to reduce the capacity and efficiency of drains makes them immensely popular as filter membranes. They usually have a grading of 80gsm.

The geotextile filter membranes are also widely used in commercial and domestic projects for wrapping water attenuation crates and soak away. The highly permeable fabric of these membranes allows water to percolate, thereby preventing silting of the soak away.

The filter membranes are used in applications involving civil engineering and for various types of landscaping purposes. They possess the capability to form stable bases, which makes them fit for ground stabilization. They can be used below aggregates of types 1 and 3. They are available in roll sizes ranging from 2m to 4.5m in width.

The unique qualities of geotextile membranes make them suitable for a number of applications.
