Be consistently nice - During the interview, your smile is very welcoming and friendly but the instant the house helper was hired, your face is like a crumpled paper. Please don't be like that. You're just giving your helper reasons to stay just three more days and she'll consider walking out.

Be approachable - Although most housemaids already have experience in household chores, they will always ask how to do certain things, because house rules on how to do chores vary from one employer to another. So, if she asks questions, answer her how would you like the job done in an approachable manner and not with Why, your bio-data says you have worked with five different employers, why in the hell are you asking how to do it!! If you do that, expect your helper to readily pack her things up and march out of your abode.

Never use filthy words - She broke one of your antique pieces? She forgot to feed little pussy?Or stained your favorite Monique Lhuiller gown? Yes, she may commit grave mistakes as these but you still have no right to use foul, painful, stabbing words. Housemaids they may be, but they ...
... are not callous to hurtful words. Never degrade your housemaids. Whenever I feel like bursting and about to scream foul words, I just cry out my anger, but I never use nasty words.

Offer friendship - This is really proven. Once an employer befriends her housemaid, there is possibility for housemaids to stay—because the environment they are working with is not threatening. How good it is to work in a friendly environment. Once in a while, initiate conversation on light things like where is she from, her interests, family history, or past employers. I usually initiate conversation with my household help. Sometimes it really feels light to have someone you can talk to while doing household chores. It makes working easier. But make sure she's doing the job right and not spend more time chatting than actually working.

Respect and keep promises - Just as one deserves respect, so is a helper. Respect can be showed through observing your helper's rest days and timely payment of salaries. Doing household chores is no easy task. With all the laundry to attend to, cooking, gardening, dusting, and vacuuming, one would always look forward to having complete rest. All helpers have a right to claim rest days. It depends on your agreement on what day your helper will take her day off. On the other hand, salaries must be paid on time. Always keep in mind that your helper might be supporting some family members, so it is very paramount that salaries not be held up.

Treat your helper as part of the family - Just because she is a helper doesn't mean she is the last to eat, she doesn't eat with the family in the table, she has her own utensils, she is not allowed to use the karaoke, she gets worn out dresses, cannot use the television, etc. etc. NO!! I have heard testimonies of helpers who were treated this way by their employers. My advise is: please treat your helpers as you would your family. Include her in daily family activities like mealtime. In this manner, helpers will feel valued and important. However, your helper must see to it that she is not abusing your kindness. Of course, she cannot just butt-in in serious and confidential conversations or lounge around in front of the television while the plates are piled up in the sink.

Engage in Bonding Time - You can take your helper with you and go window shopping! There is no wrong with that. Me, there were times when I take my helper with me in the department store. I'm lucky because she has a keen eye for good fashion. It's a double purpose, you take your helper with you in the mall for some elbow to elbow moments while at the same time, you have someone to carry those shopping bags for you if your husband is not available to accompany you.

Praise for a job well done - Be appreciative for her accomplishments. She will be more encouraged to perfect her job and at the same time, will be inspired to take initiative steps because she knows her accomplishments are recognized.

There are more ways to prevent your household helper form moving out. There are a hundred and one ways to keep them at bay. Above mentioned are just some and those are based from my experience. It doesn't hurt to befriend your helper, there's no problem taking them with you in the mall, either. Always bear in mind that helpers are human, helpers are with feelings, helpers need love and care. It's not expensive anyway. Why not share with them.
