Is Your Child Safe???-00-4962
Toddlerhood and beyond is the stage where your child begins to explore on things around them. They try to do almost anything that interest them—climb, sit on a chair, feed on his own, put on his shirt on, bathe himself, and so on. It is in this stage where our toddler is prone to accidents like breaking furniture pieces and plates, tripping on the floor, bumping against edges and so on and so forth.
No matter how careful we are, accidents are prone to happen. No matter how we wanted, we cannot guard our toddlers 24/7. That's why we have enumerated basic guides to help curb the possibilities of your toddlers catch up accidents.
Toys -be wary of the sign WARNING in toys that you buy for your kids. Some toys indicate that there are small parts which can cause choking hazards to kids. Do not leave you toddler alone when playing especially if toys include small parts.
Cellophane or plastic bags - Don't let your kids play with cellophane or plastic bags. Some kids play with these bags when toys given to them are still in the plastic bag. Tell them not to play ...
... with these as these might suffocate them. Better yet, throw the cellophane right away before handing the toy to your toddler.
Edges- keep the edges of the tables, cabinets, chairs, and counter tops wrapped in plastic films. Kids love to run around the house when playing. And it is inevitable that they hit their heads in these sharp edges. At least, with a plastic film on it, your toddler is fairly protected.
Electrical Wires and Sockets - Keep these electrical wires out of reach from your toddlers. Place it inside the cabinet. Protect outlets with safety covers as your child might experiment in inserting coins and other clips in the outlet.
Small Stuff - Keep away small stuffs like loose buttons, coins, paper clips, beads, and marbles away from your kids as this might choke them.
Keep your child away from hot things- Never carry your child when you are holding hot objects like iron, coffee, soup, hot water, etc. These things at a certain degree can burn your kid's skin.
Keep chairs away from windows - Don't place chair beside or near a window as your child might use this as stepping stone to reach for the windowsill.
Lock cabinets - It is important that your cabinet has secured locks otherwise your child can reach for those small and unsafe things that you kept in the cabinet.
Sharp objects - Don't give your toddler sharp objects like pencil unless he already knows how to properly use it. He might prick his eyes. Also, never let your kids run while holding sharp and pointed objects.
Be on the danger side - if your child sleeps with you on the bed, be sure to tuck him on the safe side of the bed, at the most end of the bed, and you on the danger side. You might not notice your child slipping out of the bed while sleeping. It is recommended that you position the bed against the wall.
Never leave your toddler alone while eating - Again, choking hazard is likely to happen if you leave your kid to eat all by himself. Also, do not give peanuts and other hard foods as this lump might choke him.
Utensils - Give your toddlers plastic spoon, cups, and plates. Not metal ones.
Poisonous Chemicals- Do not just leave pesticides, fertilizers, mosquito coils, cleanser, bleach and repellants at the surface where your kids can easily reach them. Similarly, keep away your perfumes as your kids might accidentally spray these on their eyes. Kids might spot this as potential toy.
Never leave your kids alone near water - If you bathe your kids, never leave him alone even for a single second. If the door or phone rings, ignore it. Or better yet, take your kid with you.
Rugs - Do not use slippery rugs in your home. You may use rubber rugs instead.
Clothing - Don't let your kids wear clothes that have dangling ribbon that can be pulled around your kids' neck. Also avoid clothes where your kids' fingers will easily be trapped like woven clothes.
We, parents, protective as we are, would always want our kids to be safe and protected. But as much as we wanted, we cannot simply guard them the whole time. And kids as they are, they would always play around the house, running to and fro, because that's life for them, play and play and play. So the least that we can do is take preventive measures and anticipate. I hope those listed above would greatly help reduce accidents in your home, especially your kids.
