It is so typical of us to believe whatever we read and watch. We believed the credit card company with their 0% interest fees and we tricked ourselves into believing that we can repay what we spent. A hundred swipes later, we realize that we have spent a ton of money on things that we never wanted, needed or knew existed! Then what? The bills start piling in, and every month it increases getting higher, higher and reached a point where the minimum payment amount does not even make a difference!

Then you see an ad for a debt settlement company that promises to help you clear your debts within the next few months at half the amount or whatever their ads are like. What else can you do but believe the ad, right? Wrong! With the increase in debt, settlement companies are growing like mushrooms after the rain. If you know the characteristics of a good company, they will need to be in operations for at least 3 years and they should be registered with the BBB (Better Business Bureau). Think logically on this, debt settlement companies will tell you to stop paying your creditors while they negotiate the deal for you. But, at the ...
... same time your debt increases as the interest and late fees accumulates and you have to pay the debt settlement company for their service during this time. If you look at it this way, how can debt settlement be a good idea? Can the settlement company guarantee that this will work? What if it does not work?

I would suggest that you try and settle your debts on your own. Personally speak to your creditors to negotiate new payment terms. You can do this on your own, why hire some one else? If your debt is too much and you really have to use the help of a settlement company, then try and find a nonprofit credit counselor through the National Foundation for Credit Counseling their service might be free or they would charge a fee of $25 - $50.
