An exhaust gas temperature gauge is a meter used to display the exhaust gas temperature of an internal combustion engine in aggregation with a thermocoupletype pyrometer. EGT gauges are found in airplanes and cars. By checking EGT, the pilot or driver can get an idea of the car's air-fuel ratio.
At a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, the EGT is different from that in a wiry or ironic air-fuel ratio. At ironic air-fuel ratio, the EGT either increases or decreases dependent on the fuel. Mostly EGT gauges are used for turbo equipped cars for tuning. If the sensor is fitted after the turbo, exhaust temperature can be checked. As EGT drops 200-300 °F, many installers puts thermocouple as close to the cylinder head for getting true and faster reading compared to sensor fitted after the turbo. Some advanced sprinters uses EGT gauges combining it with gauge type wide band oxygen sensor to lean the air-fuel ratio to safely raise the temperature for more power.
