What are piles?

Piles are lumps of enlarged veins surrounding the anal region, which bleed or can be dry, but both of the problems are troublesome and cause discomfort. They are also called hemorrhoids. They can be external or internal depending on their situation. They have gained special notoriety because of the blood flow they cause from stool which is painful and drains energy out of the patient.

They can be treated surgically or non-surgically with Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, piles are termed as "Arshas". They are defined as a growth of swellings and painful mass of lumps produced in and around the anal canal. The treatment in Ayurveda varies according to their type, namely internal, external, bleeding or non-bleeding.

What are the causes?

Hemorrhoids are a byproduct of unhealthy eating and deficiency of water in the body. Less intake of water and heavy intake of sticky junk food cause constipation, which produces painful stool habits and eventually results in piles.

The food which in non-fibrous in nature is especially harmful for our digestive system and also to the excretory system. It causes ...
... pressure on the rectum and results is straining or forcing of stools which creates wounds like structures and fissures in the anal area. These wounds later transform into swellings and the veins get dilated. To prevent the painful piles, one should take enough precaution while eating and consider food rich in water content, fruits and healthy proteins which are easy to digest. Lubrication with ghee or butter and oils is also essential to avoid problems like piles.

Symptoms: Piles can be diagnosed when a patient complains about passage of blood through stools, experiences pain and discomfort while sitting, and has a sensation of protruding swelling in the anal area. Occasional passage of mucus is also a characteristic of piles.

Hemorrhoids of all types can be treated without surgery. The surgical treatments are mostly topical and can cause recurrence of these conditions if proper care is not taken. There are a lot of herbal treatments available for piles. One of the many effective treatments is termed as Kshara Lepa or Kshara Sutra by Ayurveda.

Kshara is a pharmacological product of alkaline extracts of medicinal plants. The kshara lep is applied to the affected area or kshara sutra is tied to the base of hemorrhoid and is proven scientifically to reduce or completely eliminate hemorrhoids in due course of time. It basically coagulates and breaks down the mass formed by blood filled veins and soothes the tissue near anus to finally eliminate piles.

The best advantage of this treatment is minimal pain, surgery, hospitalization and minimal chances of recurrence. Besides this kind of treatment, Pilesgon capsules are also efficient in treating piles. The ingredients like Nagkesar, Kalijiri, Hartaki, Ashwagandha are all coolant agents. They help reduce the discomfort caused by the burning sensation of this condition.

These are clinically proven and available over the counter without any prescription to patients. Two doses of these capsules twice a day and for a month are enough for curing piles to a large extent. Though many treatments are available easily today, one must think of practicing a healthy lifestyle and regular eat-sleep-work-exercise habits to stay away from all health problems including piles.
